More Hair? Less Hair? Hair Everywhere? Hilary Duff Opens Up About Hair & Pregnancy

By Devan McGuinness |

My first pregnancy, with Mister Speed, my hair noticeably changed. It pretty much went to a stand-still, not-going-to-grow state. I didn’t have to shave my legs, no budgeting for hair cuts and that was a nice change for my usual ultra-thick, oh-gaw-please-cut-it before I scream hair. That was awesome — you know, until postpartum period when all my hair fell out in huge clumps — but that’s another story.

When I was pregnancy with both my girls, the opposite thing happened.  My hair was growing faster, thicker and all over the entire pregnancies. I’m sure it wasn’t as traumatic as some mama’s get, but I was still shocked by it since I didn’t experience that with my first. I remember telling myself that it was only temporary, but still I hated it!

Turns out that’s not an uncommon thing in pregnancy. It’s so common in fact that Hilary Duff (who is currently pregnant with her first child) teamed up with Funny or Die to make a comedy-spoof product aimed at this trouble for pregnant women.

When I had baby #3, I was losing hair all throughout the pregnancy. Toward the end of the third trimester, as well as postpartum, I was losing hair by the handfuls… it was awful! As a matter of fact, my doctor checked my thyroid because I had bald spots all over my head :-( My thyroid was fine… my hair wasn’t. Now it’s growing back nicely, but at first when it first started growing back, it looked horrible! I had these little spiky pieces sticking out all over my head… I looked like Pinhead from Hellraiser… ok, not exactly, but I felt like it! lol So anyway, I just had baby #4 and I thought I didn’t lose hardly any hair this time (and I didn’t lose NEAR as much as I did last time!), but the last couple of weeks, I have noticed these little hairs sticking up all over my head. Apparently the hair that I’ve lost – that I didn’t realize I lost – is growing back lol. People ask me quite often about my little baby hairs… yes, thank you, I’m growing baby hair… now leave me alone. lol.
