While writing my second book (Healthy Tipping Point: A Powerful Program for a Stronger, Happier You), I had the pleasure of interviewing Amy, a 37 year-old mother of three who had finally, finally found a way to encourage her children to eat healthy.
Amy told me that she had struggled for years to make healthy eating fun for her children – but no dice. And then, one day, she had an idea. She used a divided plate to show the kids that they needed to fill up the big section with fruits and veggies. The other sections, she explained, were for protein and grains. Her kids jumped at the chance to control the serving of their food – and that’s how the Healthy Habits Plate was created.
Amy’s idea for her own children eventually expanded into a small business – you can buy the Healthy Habits Plate for $4.99 online.
According to the website, “The Healthy Kids Plate helps parents and kids learn and follow the USDA guidelines to make half their meal fruits and vegetables. The images on the plate reinforce the teaching.”
Thanks to the Healthy Habits Plate, kids actually want to eat balanced meals. Amy explains, “Instead of complaining, they actually asked to fill their plate up with more fruits and vegetables!”
I love the concept of the plate and cannot wait until my little one is old enough to appreciate it!
