How a Body Pillow Saved My SleepKatie Loeb
I have written before about the early onset of tailbone pain that has been plaguing me for several weeks now. While that seems to wax and wane depending upon how many hours I spend sitting each day (hint: planes are my personal hell), I have a new, painful nemesis. My hips.
I can’t pinpoint when it first started, but I started waking up in the middle of the night, multiple times, with aching pain in both of my hips. It didn’t matter which side I slept on or even if I was on my back, both hips just plain hurt, and there were almost no positions I could find that were any better. The only way I could reliably sleep was on my side, but rolled over so far that I was almost on my stomach. And even then, I still had pretty moderate pain.
I tried a pillow between the knees, and it maybe helped a little, but not noticeably.
All my friends suggested a body pillow, but I was extremely skeptical because I had tried the pillow between the knees and it didn’t help. And not only that, but all the fancy body pillows my friends used were 50 bucks. Frankly, the pillow would need to be lined with tiny little angels who massage my hips all night long for me to be willing to spend that much money on a pillow. Well, at least for now, while I’m still getting some sleep despite the hip pain. Check with me again in a few months.
So while I was at Target this week buying all of my Christmas/Chanukah gifts that I couldn’t wait any longer to get, I passed by the pillow department and looked at what they had. To my surprise they had a standard straight body pillow and it was 8 bucks. 8 bucks I am willing to try.
The first night was a bit awkward, trying to keep myself and the pillow under the covers was a challenge. I was cold a lot, but I only woke up once with hip pain instead of the normal 5 or 6 times. The second night was much smoother. And besides my husband trying to steal the body pillow and snuggle with it himself, it worked like a charm. I didn’t wake up (with hip pain) a single time.
I know that 2 nights is hardly a ringing endorsement, but I have to tell you, that it was easily already the best 8 dollars I’ve ever spent in my life. And while my body pillow doesn’t curl around me and it doesn’t have any bells and whistles like some of the fancier pillows, it is officially my new best friend.
