How Late is Too Late to Prepare for A New Baby?

When I found out I was pregnant with my first, I immediately started to buy baby items. I spent hours on websites searching for the latest and greatest in baby gear making sure she had only the best. I read book after book on what to expect during my pregnancy and when she arrived. This phase lasted throughout my entire pregnancy and she was welcomed into the world with more than she probably needed and very “baby educated” parents (as much as you can be with the baby books.)

With baby number two I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t opened a single pregnancy book and I’ve only bought her one thing. I am not sure if the craziness of life has gotten in the way or if I am just avoiding the inevitable. We can’t wait for our little bundle of joy to arrive, but I just can’t seem to be motivated enough to get everything ready.

When we get back to New York City after the holidays we plan on going to our storage unit to sift through all of the boxes of baby items. Our apartment in NYC is so much smaller than our house was in Florida, so it makes all of the excessive gear that we bought for my first daughter a bit overwhelming.

With such little space we plan on using only the minimal amount of items that we need. The only problem is that we don’t have even that.

Originally I had planned on letting the new baby wear many of the clothes that my daughter wore when she was a newborn until someone pointed out to me not too long ago that this one will be born during a completely different season. It will be dead of winter in NYC when this little girl is born and it was the hottest part of summer in Florida when my first was born. That leaves us with dresses and shorts and nothing to bear the cold weather.

I’m starting to feel really guilty that I haven’t spent a fraction of the time preparing for this baby as much as I did my first. I know that since I have had a child before and know a little bit of what to expect with a newborn, I don’t need to be as nearly prepared as I did, but I still can’t help but feel horrible.

At this point I’m not even sure what I really need and what I can get rid of from our storage unit.

What baby items did you get find unnecessary for your second child?  Did you wait until the last minute to prepare?
