Never in my life would I have thought that I would be given the opportunity to walk in a fashion show during New York City’s coveted Fashion Week. Ask me if I would do it at 37 weeks pregnant and I would have probably laughed in your face. But something that I thought would never happen, is becoming a reality tomorrow afternoon.
I am honored to have been invited to walk during the the first-ever Strut: The Fashionable Mom Show. The show will premiere as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Strut will be hosted by mom and model Iman, and will show a collection of designers who are realistic for today’s moms. The message that the show wants to bring is that even though the focus of our lives changes when we have children, it is still possible to stay fashionable and look beautiful.
I am the first the admit that it’s hard to stay in tune with fashion as a mom. It’s even hard to stay fashionable while pregnant. I see some of the pregnant celebrities on the internet and wonder how they can look that good while getting ready to have a baby. The good news is that those celebrities don’t give us a realistic image of what a pregnant woman really looks like. I have my days when I am feeling down in the dumps and frumpy. But no matter how big I feel, I know that I need to embrace those curves that this pregnancy is giving me and take full advantage of it.
I went for my fitting for the show last week, and while I was feeling big and swollen (at 36 weeks I was allowed to,) I tried on my clothes and have never felt so beautiful. The stylist even asked me if I would be willing to wear heels down the runway. I didn’t even hesitate with a yes, because after all, how many times will I be given the opportunity to walk a fashion show during Fashion Week?
This is the first time that real moms have walked the runway. Real moms who aren’t just a size zero and six feet tall. Women of all shapes and sizes. These are real moms, like myself, who have real curves and have those post baby bodies that we have to learn to love and embrace.
The brands that will be gracing the runway are ones that might have never had the opportunity to do so before. These are brands that everyday moms can afford and still look fashionable in. Clothes that are in the store now and that we can go out and purchase.
I cannot wait to share the details with you about my maternity looks. The two designers I am wearing embrace the pregnant figure and really know how to show off a growing belly.
I will do a follow up post with pictures and more details about the fashion show on Friday. If you would like to tune into the show (and watch me waddle down the runway) you can check out my Facebook page or blog with a live stream video (links are below.) The show starts at 3pm EST.
I cannot wait to rock the runway for all the pregnant moms out there! Wish me luck!
