I’ve never used pregnancy as an excuse to eat more. I always try to remain pretty active and keep with my daily diet and try not to eat much else. It worked for my first pregnancy and I ended up eating a lot more after I had my daughter, when I was breastfeeding, than I did when I was pregnant.
I didn’t really experience any cravings during my first pregnancy, which in turn, had me eating pretty much the same amount of food I ate prior to pregnancy. My appetite didn’t increase, so I didn’t increase my food intake. I ended up gaining the normal amount of weight for my size with nothing extra and was able to lose it pretty quickly after my daughter was born.
During this pregnancy, however, I haven’t been as lucky.
In my first and second trimester, I felt so sick from my morning sickness that I had to force myself to eat. When I was hungry, I had to eat a very bland diet just to keep my food down. I would even joke with a pregnant friend of mine, whose appetite increased tremendously, that I haven’t ever experienced that problem.
Apparently I jinxed myself, because when my third trimester hit, so did the need and desire to eat everything in sight. Maybe it was the morning sickness finally subsiding enough for me to eat what I wanted or that my body just needs more nutrients, but lately I’ve been eating everything.
The cravings that I’ve never experienced have surfaced and now I find the need to order whatever I want at that moment. It doesn’t help that I live in a city that will deliver virtually anything that your heart desires.
Yesterday it was a crazy craving for a cucumber sandwich. I haven’t eaten one of those in ages, but I wanted it and I wanted it right then. Within 30 minutes it was at my door ready for me to devour. I ate it, all of it, and even the side of fries that it came with. The worst part of all, I was still hungry for something else after. I did opt for a healthier choice for my “dessert” and had an orange instead of giving into the chocolate chip cookie that was calling my name.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt this hungry in my entire life. No matter what I eat, nothing seems to be enough. When I do feel full after a meal, 30 minutes later I am starving wanting something else.
Somehow I’ve still managed to gain the same amount of weight I did during my first pregnancy (at least for now,) but I do always dread stepping on the scale at my doctors office when I go.
I know that my big appetite could have some lasting consequences on my body, but I try not to think about it that much because it’s obvious my body is telling me something about always being hungry. I’m just trying to give my body what it needs, even if it is a red velvet cupcake.
