Last night, I went to a party for Four Seasons of Hope (a kids’ charity sponsored by Samsung). The place was peppered with celebrities celebrating/promoting their charities (or in the case of real housewife Jill Zarin, possibly just themselves). J.Lo and Marc Anthony were the super-special guests. Before their grand finale performance (Hotel California?!) they spoke about their charitable work with mothers and babies.
J. Lo said the Maribel foundation, which she started last year with her sister, Linda Lopez, was inspired by their simultaneous pregnancies, and the intensity and vulnerability they felt as a result. Jennifer let us in on some of her dreams for the foundation, and how, with the help of Samsung, she hopes to make them happen.
The Maribel Foundation is devoted to providing care to mothers, babies and children in parts of the world where optimal care is not easily available. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony experienced a scare with their infant daughter, Emme, which really drove home the value of high level medical care. The couple have made it their mission to help other families gain access to the same level of expertise.
Their big focus is on Telemedecine- a new development made possible by networks and technology (hence the Samsung connection). Telemedecine allows patients to seek specialist care via video and internet, so doctors in elite hospitals will be able to advise on diagnosis and treatment remotely. In poorer hospitals with limited access to specialists, this advancement could make a huge difference.
