Actress Jennifer Connelly, aged 40, gave birth in the water to a baby girl on May 31 in her Brooklyn home. How exciting for mature age mothers, water birthers, Brooklynites and Requiem For A Dream fans!
The baby girl, awesomely named Agnes Lark Bettany, was born in a planned water birth with a home birth midwife. For those of you unfamiliar, water birth is considered safe as, amazingly, babies do not take their first breath until their body hits the air. (Here is a cool video of a water birth.) They are also desirable for mothers as the water provides tremendous pain relief.
A recent study suggested that home births seem to be gaining popularity, especially among white women. I must say that my personal anecdotal evidence suggests this may be true. Both of my children in two different schools in New York City have classmates with pregnant mothers planning home births. The home birth midwives I know say they are doing all they can to keep up with the demand.
“Everyone is healthy and doing well,” Jennifer’s rep explained. “The family is very excited.” This is Connelly’s third child. She has two boys, Stellan, 7, with husband, actor Paul Bettany, and Kai, 13, with ex David Dugan.
Congratulations Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany! What a magnificent way to spend the long weekend.
