Jennifer Hudson On Oprah: How I Lost The Baby Weight

It was a classic Oprah moment: A story of dramatic weight loss,  self-renewal and the overcoming of family tragedy.

Jennifer Hudson–new mother, star of Dreamgirls, and Grammy and Oscar winner–perched in Oprah’s cozy ochre arm chair, told the riveted talk show host and the world how she lost 80 pounds, going from a size 16 to a size 6.

“It’s like a brand new me,” Hudson said. “Sometimes I don’t even recognize myself.” Her secret: THE MINDSET. And Weigh Watchers. “At the end of the day, you can have all of the money, trainers and chefs you want but if your mind isn’t in it you won’t lose the weight,” she said. Hudson made a decision to lose the weight when she was pregnant with her now two-year-old son David Jr. She prepares her own food and works out on a regular basis.

Hudson is happy with size 6: “That 4 and that 2 and that 0 is not for me.”

Hudson also spoke about the devastation of losing her her mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew in a gun massacre a couple of year ago. The three relatives were murdered by Jennifer’s sister’s ex-boyfriend. Hudson is engaged to lawyer-turned-wrestler David Otunga; they’ve been together for four years.

It’s pretty impressive– that’s a lot of weight to lose. I’m sure the mindset is absolutely crucial. But I can’t help thinking that being able to afford childcare and other kinds of help helps that mindset do what it needs to do.
