In a long awaited revelation, Mariah Carey has finally come out of the closet about her pregnancy. The announcement comes after years of “Is she or isn’t she” public speculation about whether the singer was pregnant or just a little chunky. At the time I imagined this dialogue must have been somewhat unpleasant for Mariah, who has had a number of well-documented struggles with her weight in the past.
But it turns out that was the least of Mariah’s problems with the constant pregnancy murmur from the press…

In this morning’s Today show, Mariah tells host Billy Bush that she actually WAS pregnant sometime during the past two years of bumpwatch buzz. But after a month, she miscarried. The constant scrutiny of the press added to the pain of her experience—just the scenario I was wondering if Tina Knowles might be trying to protect her daughter Beyoncé against.
Miscarriage is such a difficult, often traumatic experience. I can’t even begin to imagine how that would be amplified by knowing that millions of people around the world are assuming your pregnancy. Mariah won’t say how far along she is now—privacy is clearly even more important to her now than ever—but she is due in the spring, so we can assume she’s in her second trimester. She seems really happy, and I’m glad she took her own time and protected her right to privacy until she was ready to share the news in her own way. Congrats!
