Hospital Bag Checklist - What to pack in your maternity bag

Whether you pack at the beginning of your pregnancy, or throw things together at the first labor pains, your hospital bag is one of those important things you should try to remember when you’re running out the door. While every woman has specific things she’ll want to bring with her to the hospital, here’s a general list of things you’ll want to remember (and some mini-lists for your partner and baby, too).

For Mom

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Hairbrush
  • Deodorant
  • Shampoo/conditioner
  • Change of clothes
  • Underwear
  • Slippers
  • Pajamas/nightgown/robe
  • Glasses/contact case (if applicable)
  • Nursing or otherwise loose, soft bra
  • Maxi pads
  • Magazines/books/eReader
  • iPod/music player (and a charger)
  • Snacks, water and/or Gatorade
  • Cell phone charger
  • Medical insurance card
  • List of medications you’ve been taking
  • Any information your doctor may need to know
  • Birth plan if you have one

For Dad/Partner

  • Cell phone and charger
  • List of important phone numbers
  • Change for vending machines
  • Snacks
  • Change of clothes and bathing suit if there’s the option of a shower or tub
  • Camera/video camera
  • Magazines/books/eReader
  • Copy of your birth plan

For Baby

(NOTE: Check with the hospital beforehand on whether or not they provide diapers, wipes and other newborn essentials such as formula and pacifiers. Most do, but on the off-chance that yours does not, make sure you’ve stocked up on everything before you give birth.)

  • A swaddling blanket or two
  • Several weather-appropriate newborn tops/bottoms or onesies
  • Properly fastened car seat (You can’t leave the hospital without this.)
  • Newborn diapers
  • Wipes
  • Formula and bottles if you’ve decided not to breastfeed
