9 Ways to Take Great Maternity Photos

It's All about Timing 1 of 10
The best time to show off your baby bump is two months before your due date. Photographer Koren Reyes says, "Between six to 10 weeks before the due date is the optimal time to get great maternity shots, because women develop a great shape that you want to capture."
Let in the Light 2 of 10
Shooting outdoors? Avoid direct sunlight to avoid harsh shadows. "My favorite time to shoot is an hour before sunset. The light is really magical then," says photographer Kristin Rachelle. Shooting indoors? Artificial lighting can be tricky, so play around to find out what works.
Get in Your Comfort Zone 3 of 10
Whatever you wear should highlight your baby bump. How you feel while shooting will show up in your pictures—so make sure you feel great! Solid or print? Choose the one the best represents your personality. Both can show up well in pics, but you want to make sure you're wearing something that reflects you.
Make It a Family Affair 4 of 10
Take a few pics with your partner and your kids. Group shots can be a fantastic way to show how your family is sharing in the joy of your pregnancy and this very special time.
Go Outside 5 of 10
"Shooting pregnant women in a natural environment creates a really nice effect," says Rachelle. Take a stroll or hang around your yard and let the great outdoors compliment your blooming body. Enhance the nature theme holding flowers or leaning against a tree.
Surrender Control 6 of 10
Map out a plan before you begin the shoot. Decide what specific shots are important to capture and make sure your opinion is heard. However, once you step in front of the camera, it's time to let the photog take over. You may feel vulnerable, but allow the cameraperson to take the lead.
Choose a Photographer You Trust 7 of 10
It's vital that you are comfortable posing in front of whomever will be manning the camera. Choose someone who will listen to your ideas and make you feel at ease. If you decide to use a pro, interview candidates to get a feeling for who will make you feel relaxed.
Black and White vs. Color 8 of 10
If you're not sure whether you would prefer your shots in color or in black and white, then take both. Using a digital camera will allow you to play around with the images, but if you're using film buy some of each so you have options. Keep in mind that many professional maternity photographers find that preggo pics turn out better in color.
