Meet The Guncles: Hollywood’s Favorite Dad Power Couple

By Casi Densmore-Koon |

You may know the doting dual dads Bill Horn & Scout Masterson, aka “The Guncles,” from Oxygen’s Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. If there is one couple I have major love for it’s Bill + Scout, Hollywood’s favorite Dad power couple for sure. Not only have I had the pleasure of working with Bill & Scout directly, but I’ve also been lucky enough to interview the super-fab Dad duo last year. You may remember when Bill & Scout shared their wedding and the birth of their first child, the beautiful Simone with Oxygen TV viewers and became an inspiration to other hopeful families who share the blissful dream of becoming parents. These serious hands-on dads (juggling full time jobs and a growing Hollywood profile all while running a household) recently founded an amazing mentoring service, “Hold My Hand”, as a way to help others through the adoption process.

Read on to get all the details on the new service and really “meet” the Guncles! They have great advice for new parents.

1. You recently founded a mentoring service, “Hold My Hand”, as a new way to help others through the adoption process. Tell us a little bit more about this service and how you hope to help others get through this rough time.

Going through the adoption process on the show (Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, Oxygen) took open adoption into many homes of people who really didn’t know much about open adoption or how the process works. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to show as much of how the process works on the show as we would have liked to. So many people started reaching out to us through Facebook and Twitter asking about the process. We literally received thousands of emails and letters from fans. From that experience we decided to share our knowledge of open adoption and the many things we learned along our journey. We help people with everything from “how to get started” to getting the nursery ready and everything in between. We’ve coined ourselves “Adoption Concierges” and we don’t charge for our mentoring services.

2. As a seriously inspiring duo, how do you manage family life + working life? What tips do you have for other working parents out there?

First of all, thank you for considering us to be inspiring. We hope that people can see from our family appearing on reality tv that our “gay family” is just like theirs. We’re very hands on dads. Balancing working life is challenging, but we’ve simplified it by starting our own boutique public relations firm (Marque Communications) and our office is in a small building on our property. So we’re just steps away from home, which allows us to see Simone off and on throughout the day and we are also able to have lunch with her. Times are tough in this economy, so our advice would be if you’ve been looking for work for a while, consider tapping into your passions and starting your own small business. We know self employment isn’t for everyone, but for us we’ve managed to make it work and feel very fortunate that we don’t have to commute 2-3 hours per day in the car. It gives us much more quality Simone time!

3. What Dad-approved products have changed your life? What are the Hollywood Dads’ must-haves?

We represent a few of our passion products via our pr firm and because we’re the bosses, we can do so! We’re big fans of the 4 Moms “mamaRoo” baby swing and their new stoller, the “Origami” – The world’s first power folding stroller! Dads we meet really like its headlight’s feature. Walking around, the lights are the first thing people notice and comment on. It will also charge your smart phone. It’s beyond awesome!! We’re also big fans of the Britax baby carrier (because many carriers are made too slight for big guys and this one has a great deal of back suppport) and all of the cool products that Skip Hop makes.

4. Being a new parent can be difficult, yet rewarding. What advice can you offer up for new parents?

Don’t sweat the small stuff and learn to go with the flow. Raising a family is a wild ride and you’ve got to be ready to roll with the punches!

5. I am sure you have gotten tons of advice both before you welcomed Simone and after. What words to live by have stuck with you? What tips really comes in handy for you as Dads?

A parent friend of ours once told us – “Sleep is the best gift you can give your child.” We live by this rule. We also believe that it’s incredibly important for the parents to get a full nights rest as well. You need to be well rested and ready to be the best parent you can be.

6. Even though you waited some time and were so blessed with your daughter – what was the hardest part for you of adjusting to life with a new baby?

If you want to have a social dinner with us, be ready for a 5PM reservation :-)

It’s good to see positive gay role models. I’m 61yo gay male. Been out all my life and boy have things changed. When I really came out was in San Antonio Texas. Most everyone were in The closet. We were able to socialize at a dance bar,in the country. There the service guys and the lesbians would socialize with locals, what fun. There was a set up where the mps came in a light would go on and everybody would mix with partners. Now with daft, that’s all changed.
Keep up the good work and make us proud!
