You may or may not have heard that Ricki Lake is coming out with a followup to her documentary The Business of Being Born. It’s called More Business of Being Born, and instead of a feature length film it will be 4 one hour episodes containing various interviews and insights into natural birth.
I was able to see the first episode –
it’s a lengthy interview with the midwife of all midwives Ina May Gaskin and some of the other midwives on The Farm (the sustainable living community where they practice). The interview shows interesting photo and video history of The Farm’s first years, as it’s commune days in the 70’s. The episode is not just about natural birth or home birth, but asks deeper questions such as why the induction rate in the U.S. is so high, how the maternal mortality rate is out of control for our industrialized nation and what is causing mothers to die, and also shares some insight from the midwives as far as their theories on autism. I found it to be engaging and inspiring and I couldn’t help but wish it was longer!
I really enjoyed this peek inside The Farm and Ina May herself, it was fun to see her true hippie side but also the researcher she is at heart. I would love to know what you think when you watch the episode – the full DVD set isn’t available for purchase until early November, but the first episode is available to rent online at their website for a limited time (just until Sept. 12th).
