My Favorite Nipple Repair Cream

erinbehan ErinBehan |

The very idea that a breastfeeding mom needs nipple cream is disturbing to most first-time moms–I know it was to me. They really get that sore? Cracked? Bleeding? Unfortunately, I hate to report that they often do.

I won’t go into the nitty-gritty details of what happened to my nipples, but when a lactation consultant gasps when you remove your nursing bra, you know you have problems.

Only one non-prescription nipple cream ever made me feel better (eventually I had to resort to a prescription), and I can’t recommend it highly enough as something that should pre-stock your medicine cabinet before you ever give birth.

It was given to me by my midwife and truly saved my nipples, if not what felt like my life. It’s Wish Garden’s New Mother’s Nipple Repair and Salve. Everything on Wish Garden’s site has been prepared in small batches, “apothecarial style,” using wild harvested and almost exclusively organically grown herbs. Some of the company’s products are available at Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottage, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen this one there.
