After nearly 20 years, the USDA’s food pyramid has been replaced by a food plate.
First Lady Michelle Obama, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack have announced a new food icon to replace the food pyramid.
The new food plan, MyPlate, focuses on daily servings of vegetables, fruits, grains, protein and dairy, just as the food pyramid did, but uses an symbol of a plate to make it easier to visualize a healthy diet.
What does this mean for your pregnancy?
The USDA’s website offers Daily Food Plan for Moms, a simple calculator to help you plan a healthy plate.
The calculator factors in your age, due date, height, pre-pregnancy weight, and physical activity to provide you with a customized food plan.
