A neighbor, Hazel, Head, tells police the family had lived in the Harlem apartment building for years and she remembered seeing the mother of the victim while she was pregnant, and that “she seemed happy.”
The newborn, who was not identified, was taken to Metropolitan Hospital from Second Avenue between 118th and 119th streets just before 6 a.m. this morning where it was pronounced dead, an FDNY spokesman told reporters from DNAinfo.com.
The awning over the Harlem building’s entrance identifies it as part of the Youth Action Programs and Homes Inc., which describes itself on its Facebook page as “an East Harlem based organization that has been committed to empowering youth and building community.”
A staffer said the agency serves low-income and homeless families, but had no comment about the child who died.
An NYPD spokesman said he did not immediately have information about the incident but Detectives on the scene told reporters a crime did not seem to have been committed.
