Pre-paying Your Ob Gyn's Fees. Is This Normal?

First I must say, I LOVE my OB-GYN. She seriously could be my BFF but she has seen parts that I wouldn’t wish anyone to see and that right there keeps our relationship totally doctor – patient.

She delivered my baby Iza last year, and will deliver Quatro this Summer.  In regards to her Ob Gyn fees – she makes us pre-pay her anticipated charges before the third trimester. The fees that she asks are pre-paid are the anticipated charges that insurance will pay her. While her office is very accommodating in offering payment plans up until the third trimester, there is a kink.

The OB-GYN doesn’t bill the insurance until AFTER delivery. All of my visits are lumped in as a service and after the baby arrives, she sends one massive bill to the insurance company.  That’s fine and dandy, but we set aside money in our Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay these fees. According to our new FSA provider- I can’t use that account for her pre-paid charges UNTIL she bills and there is an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to verify that indeed that is what the money is going towards.

Sure we can pay the charges and then be reimbursed from our FSA AFTER delivery and she has billed insurance, but its defeating the purpose of the FSA and we end up out of pocket.

So preggos, here is my question to you – Did you have to pre-pay your Ob Gyn’s fees upfront? Have your ran into any FSA issues?
