Readers Respond: How Did You Know You Were Pregnant?

By Devan McGuinness |

Let me tell you a weird secret — I have always been afraid of being ‘one of those people’ who end up on one of the ‘I didn’t know I was pregnant shows’ and only realize that I am when the baby is literally exiting my body. I don’t really know where this fear comes from or why I have it, but I do.

I am pretty confident that I will never end up in that situation. Not only because I am pretty in tune with my body and chart my daily temperatures but also because my body loves to give me some pretty clear signals when I am knocked up. Sore breasts, an ultra-sensitive nose and I would cry at silly (like really silly) commercials — all which are not typical me.

I asked some friends of mine and Babble readers if they knew they were pregnant before a test would tell them. Many responded with a ‘yes’ so I wanted to find how HOW they knew — what clues did their bodies give off? Did their bodies give off any signs?

I teach high school. During one of my more challenging classes, I felt a wave of emotion wash over me as the students refused to stay on task. For the first time ever in my career, I actually yelled at them. I knew something was weird; took the test when I got home and was met with two pink lines!

  2. Jacqui says:

I knew I was pregnant 5 days after I ovulated. I have dealt with infertility, so we were actively trying.. so I was very aware of my ovulation date. I ovulated on a Wed/Thursday. On Monday, on the way home from work, I bought a large bag of beef jerky and ate it all in about 10 minutes. Then I asked my husband to make chicken wings for dinner that night. I knew then, because I am almost a vegetarian.. and don’t even like meat! LOL Still had to wait another week to take the test… but sure enough it was positive!

  3. ariela says:

We had been trying for a while so I’d had a few months of being totally convinced I was pregnant but then being disappointed when my period would come. The last time, I had that feeling again and my chart looked promising, but I took two tests when I was already late and both were negative (or so faint that I didn’t believe them). The night before I took the test that was unmistakably positive, I found myself becoming extremely emotional and crying excessively at the new Star Trek movie that was on TV (the circumstances of Kirk’s birth are quite upsetting…). In between crying I was laughing at myself, and I said to DH that I must be pregnant because I was in such a weird emotional state.

  4. Mande D says:

I’m already a pretty emotional person, but hubs and I were watching some action movie, hardcore action no reason to cry at the end movie, and I just started bawling. I looked at him and said “I don’t know why I’m crying. I only get like this when I’m pregnant.” I stopped and ran to the bathroom. Sure enough, two pink lines.

  5. Rachel says:

I’d had some false alarms during the time we were trying so I was reluctant to believe it. I suspected I was pregnant because I was late, but I couldn’t take the test because my husband was out of town. But the night before I tested, I went out dancing with a friend and I remember really not wanting to be there. I was very tired and the music felt way too loud and it was too hot in the place. I only stayed out as late as I needed to to be polite because I just wanted to be at home in a comfortable, quiet place.

  6. shotgunkorea says:

I had a hunch because I had unusual cramping, but then I had a dream that I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I woke up right away and took a test—positive!

  7. hayley says:

having two children already and having the same symptom, i woke one morning with the taste of metallic in my mouth, over powering taste of it… i turn to my partner and told him i was pregnant “sure sure” was his response, pregnancy test came back positive that morning :D

  8. Virginia T. says:

Hubby and I had talked and decided we would stop trying to prevent pregnancy. And after “trying” once we had a couple weeks of not being intimate (hey life gets busy and we all get tired…). Then I started having REALLY strange dreams and I could smell EVERYTHING and I hadn’t even missed my period yet. So I waited for about 5 days after my missed period and we drove together to get the test. On the way to the store the smell of the pavement and exhaust was turning my stomach. Got home took the test and sure enough I was preggo. That super human smelling and crazy dreams stayed with me for months after delivery…

  9. Pamela says:

With my first I had every symptom, but ignored it until I was 2 weeks late. With this pregnancy I was always hungry. My stomach growled constantly & that was very unlike me. My jeans immediately were to tight & wouldn’t zip. I thought I was late & decided to take my temp while changing my daughter. It was 99.7! I said, “Omg, mommy is pregnant!” My baby was only 3 months old at the time. I took a test after work & sure enough it was positive. After 4 ultrasounds to confirm the date, it turns out I was 8dpo when I tested! I ovulated late from stress of moving & it being my first cycle after my daughter.

  10. cheylene says:

I should have had my period and then another one LOL! I took a first response test and it was negative, then I finally took another one after 7 weeks with no period, I bought a cheap walmart brand test and it took about 2 seconds for it to tell me that, yes, I was pregnant-duh!

  11. Alicia says:

My cycle was actually consistent for once, and I was a day late. On top of it I had been exhausted for a week like I was sick, but I didn’t have any symptoms of illness. So I figured I’d test, and it showed up right away!

  12. suzanne says:

I was told by a doctor that I would not be able to have a child on my own. I decided to try anyways. After many disapointments,we moved to a new town. A few weeks later I was extremely tired and just did not feel right. I even wanted chicken noodle soup which I never had eaten. I then noticed my nipples were way darker and sore. I decided maybe that I had mono. I then randomly got sick and decided to take a test to determine if it was a baby or mono… and surprise the doctor was wrong and I now am a proud mother of a healthy baby girl.

  13. Angela says:

I woke up one morning and couldn’t stand the smell or taste of coffee (which I normally love) combined with immense fatigue and nausea. I’d been suspicious earlier than this, but it was the coffee that really did it. When it lasted a week, I got a test. The most surprising was that I was already nearly 8 weeks along.

  14. Mayra H. says:

My mom knew weeks before I did but I just thought she was crazy. After 2 months of no symptoms, finally at 2.5 months I began getting crazy morning migrains so I gave in to getting a stick….it was possitive!! a switched turned on and THEN thats when I started getting nausea n dizzyness…2 weeks later at 3 months the dr confirmes…”you are 3 months in” I was just O_O speachless. lol

  15. Roslynn says:

I get horrible PMS, as in I hate the world and everything in it! LOL I’m also like clock work, so when I got to the day that I knew I’d start hating everything and I was actually HAPPY, I knew I was pregnant! No pee stick needed for me, but I did use one to convince DH. :)

  16. Amanda says:

My first pregnancy, even though I was just a day late, I just had a feeling I was pregnant. I took the test on Mother’s day and sure enough, I was positive. :) For my second pregnancy the first clue was a decrease in my milk supply. My daughter was only 8 1/2 months old so I was still breastfeeding. My supply dropped in half before I had even missed a period. I thought it was just that I was having a stressful argument with a friend, but decided to take a test just in case. I didn’t expect to get pregnant the first time not using birth control!

  17. Ali says:

I never get heartburn… but during my first pregnancy it came and it was strong! we lost our first son at 20 weeks and we are now trying again and i am getting heartburn!!! too early to test but all signs are pointing to baby… a girl can hope and dream ;)

  18. Jessica says:

i knew i was pregnant before i took the home test but i lost the first one after 3 months pregnant but i got pregnant again a few later and i had a moment that i KNEW i was pregnant and something, an instinct as you may call it told me to take a home test and it showed positive but the one thing about my second pregnancy is that i didn’t know that i was expecting triplets till my first ultrasound at 13 weeks…..and yes they we’re conceived naturally, to the people wondering….anyways when i was being shipped to Ottawa general hospital they told me i was having a boy and 2 girls, well i was able to tell you before anyone told me where they we’re in my stomach and i knew which one was which when they came out….i think it’s a mother thing, that you just KNOW….

  19. Val Payne says:

Three months after being told that conceiving on our own was “virtually impossible”, I was doing dishes after dinner and crying. I never cry. Then I threw up in the sink, my mother in law (who lives with us) pointed at me and said “Oh my God, you’re pregnant!”. One ugrent trip to Target and three pregnancy tests ( I took all three in the box!) later confirmed her hunch! I’m nursing our week old son as I type this. ;)

  20. HH says:

Everything gets this strange smell to it and I gag when brushing my teeth!

  21. annie says:

I get terrible back pain in the very beginning of my pregnancies. This time I wasnt trying and thought I had injured my back. I couldnt even sit up straight! I went to the er and had xrays and they sent me home with pain meds. A week later I missed my period and this feeling of panick came over me. I was so afraid of what the xray and pain meds did to the baby. He’s due in 4 weeks and I still have night mares about birth defects despite me Drs reassurance!

  22. renee says:

I was dizzy two weeks after we convived, dizzy to the point to were I fainted a couple time. I also would have this cramp that would wake me up at the same time every night, and I wast suppose to be cramping yet. That was the only signs I had. And I am so intune with my body that aunt flow would come almost to the same hour every month. I was suppose to start on Sunday afternoon and by Monday morning when I was having crap but no period I took on… 4 am.

  23. Melissa says:

We had been trying for several month, and after years of infertility I was about to give up hope. We went out to supper with my parents and I kept commenting that the mashed potatoes tasted rotten. My husband told me I should take a test when we got home, but I just thought I was comming down with the flu. I took the test when we got home and went and layed down, just knowing it would be negative. Hubby came out of the bathroom and said “YOUR PREGNANT!” 2nd baby I thought I had the flu again, but when I ate mashed potatoes and they tasted rotten again I knew! Hubby got the test and got to tell me I was pregnant again!

  24. jennifer angelly says:

i had sore boobs and cramps with my first other than that i had no symptoms. my friends new before i did. i worked as a house keeper andone morning i walked in and hit my boob on one of the carts it hurts so bad it made me cry. my friend came up to me and asked what was wrong i told her what happened she put her fingers up like a cross and started backing away and just kept saying your pregnant didnt believe her until i started getting sick everytime i would take a puff of a ciggarette needless to say my daughter helped me kick the habit.
i knew i was pregnant with my second on our 5th anniversary we went to see transformers 2 and i didnt get to see most of it because i had to pee so much about the third time i went to pee i started talking to myself i asked myself why am i peeing so much? last time i was peeing this much i was preg- OH NO!! didnt say anything till the next morning when i asked the hubby if he saw 2 pink lines too cause they were very faint

  25. HazelsMamma says:

I knew I was pregnant when my boobs were sore, and “Aunt Flo” didn’t visit. After the 3rd week of this I finally broke down and took a pregnancy test. When it came back positive I cried, then asked that I retake it. The second one came back positive as well. So I called the family and told them the news. As upset as I was then, I wouldn’t trade my daughter for anything in the world now! :)

  26. Jeefer says:

Three days after my fiance and I gave into the moment and had sex without any protection, I went to my mother’s house to visit and got very VERY shaky and sick from massive hunger and ate a lot of crackers to try and calm my body down before dinner. I just KNEW right then that 3 months after having my first son, I was preggo again! Annnnnnd.. I was. Took about 6 tests and the blue dye ones would fade but the pink dyes stayed. Yes, they were positive about 4 days before my period was even due! So I had barely been knocked up a week and a half before it was showing up lol.

  27. Sondra says:

I had a dream with two of my three children…..

  28. Grey says:

I almost end up in that show myself I, had every symptom in the book wich I atributed to the stress I was under towards the end of tthe first trimester I was suppose to get treated for a medical condition I have when the nurse that was getting me ready and.voila test positive 9 test after that It finally dawned on me and a year after that im the proud moma of a beautifull smart lovely baby girl

  29. Kayla says:

I was four days late, but figured I was just stressed, and didn’t want to believe I was pregnant. My sister, who is also pregnant and was about 11 weeks at the time, was like, Haha you’re knocked up!!!! The funny thing was, was when she found out she was pregnant, her fiancée looked at me and said I now pass the “torch” to you, but I just laughed it off. Anyways, it wad St Patty’s day 2012, and I really wanted whole milk for some reason. So a friend and I went to the store, and as soon as I walked in, I could smell the bakery in the back on the other side. He busted up laughing and was like Haha you’re preggers!! I still didn’t think I was, but we bought a test anyways, so I could prove him and my sister wrong. As we were walking to the front, I looked down, and the milk had leaked on my boob, and he laughed and said Awwww look you’re lactating already!!! We headed back to my house, and I immediately grabbed the test so I could prove them wrong as I thought. I peed on the first one, and one line immediately popped up, but I didn’t see a second one. Then that little sucker slowly came in. I looked at the end of the stick, and sure enough, 2 pink lines meant pregnant!! I started bawling, and yelled for Cassie and Chris, and said I’m pregnant!!!! They busted up laughing. I still didn’t want to believe it so I waited an hour and took another test, and sure enough it was positive too. Confirmed it at the doctor three days later, and I’m now 13 weeks, and 3 days :)

  30. Leyla says:

I knew when I was nursing my toddler and unexpectedly my boobs started to hurt while he was latching.

  31. Deborah says:

A month before I was pregnant, I was a week late and took a test and it was negative. I was disappoint. We had been trying for almost two years and already had a miscarriage earlier that year. Then, the next month, I was in school and late again, but didn’t think anything about it because of last month. But I kept waking up feeling a bit sick, again not thinking much of it. For lunch, I had something with tomatoes sauce and it gave me horrible indigestion, I never really had indigestion before. Usually, if I got heartburn, all I need today was drink some cold water and it went away, but tums won’t even let this up. I finally took the test a week later and true enough!!! Now my daughter is 10 months!!!
