Rufus Wainwright and his fiance, Jorn Weisbrodt announced the birth of their daughter yesterday. The baby is the birth child of Lorca Cohen, Leonard Cohen’s daughter and Wainwright. She has been given a beautiful name, Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen. That the birthmother’s name gets top billing is unusual and quite moving.
Viva was born February 2, 2011. Her debut to the world comes via Wainwright’s website via the following loving words from Wainwright: “Darling daughter Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen was born on February 2, 2011 in Los Angeles, California to proud parents Lorca Cohen, Rufus Wainwright and Deputy Dad Jorn Weisbrodt. The little angel is evidently healthy, presumably happy and certainly very very beautiful.”
Wainwright also posted, “Daddy #1 would like to offer everyone a digital cigar and welcome the little lady in with a French phrase from his favourite folksong, A La Claire Fontaine: ‘Il y a longtemps que je t’aime, jamais je ne t’oublierai.’” I believe this translates to, “I have loved you for a long time. I will never forget you.”
Imagine being born into a family of such brilliant musicians and poets. Give that baby a rattle!
