Swedish Mom Crashes Car While… Breastfeeding

By ceridwen |

Here’s a cautionary tale about the dangers of maternal multitasking. A mother in Sweden was breastfeeding her newborn baby while driving…. and crashed. Though air-bags inflated and the vehicle was “severely damaged,” no one was seriously injured.

Her two other kids were in the backseat strapped into car seats. The mom, according to a Swedish newspaper, is “under criminal suspicion.”

“The child she was nursing was three weeks old. She didn’t see that the truck was braking, so she drove into it,” a Lidköping police officer told a Swedish radio station.

I have to say this all makes my heart race. She made a terrible mistake. She should  have pulled over. Sometimes you just have to pull over.

I remember doing some pretty amazing breast gymnastics to get my nursing baby to stop screaming in a car. I’d have him strapped in the car seat in a taxi and somehow I’d contort myself so that I could get a nipple in there. It wasn’t ideal. There were some looks from truck drivers. I’m not recommending it. But you’d be amazed at the things you do…. Still, while driving? No, no, no. That can’t work for so many reasons. Maybe the baby was in a sling? I can’t even picture it.

Anyway, I’m relieved they’re all OK. And hope that this is a lesson we can all learn from. Sometimes it’s best to do one thing at a time.

That is insane! The worst I have done, is after stopping many times ona long road trip, whenmy baby began to cry for mommy’s milk I jumped in the back seat while on the highway, unhooked her from her car seat and fed her right quick. But WHILE driving…wow. Just pull over or let the little one cry a couple of miniutes til u reach ur destination…it’s good for lung development right? :)

I’m sorry but this mother is crazy to even take such a risk in the first place and she should thank her lucky stars that she, nor any of her kids, especially the one who was nursing, wasn’t injured. Breastfeeding is a choice, one that isn’t easy and very time consuming. Sometimes you have to do it at the least inconvienent times but as a parent, the priority should always be about safety first then feeding second! If your baby can’t wait til you reach your destination, then pull your azz over on the side of the road when it’s safe to do so. You might wind up running late, but it’s a hell lot better than to even risk getting into a car accident. Driving and breastfeeding don’t mix!!! I can’t see how anyone would think this is even an option…

Just wrong! Many, many accidents happen because mom is distracted while driving,,,stretching around, to reach for pacifier, dropped toy-whatever. Granted, crying can be nerve wracking-especially while driving..PLEASE in a split second, lives can be lost.
