Here’s a cautionary tale about the dangers of maternal multitasking. A mother in Sweden was breastfeeding her newborn baby while driving…. and crashed. Though air-bags inflated and the vehicle was “severely damaged,” no one was seriously injured.
Her two other kids were in the backseat strapped into car seats. The mom, according to a Swedish newspaper, is “under criminal suspicion.”
“The child she was nursing was three weeks old. She didn’t see that the truck was braking, so she drove into it,” a Lidköping police officer told a Swedish radio station.
I have to say this all makes my heart race. She made a terrible mistake. She should have pulled over. Sometimes you just have to pull over.
I remember doing some pretty amazing breast gymnastics to get my nursing baby to stop screaming in a car. I’d have him strapped in the car seat in a taxi and somehow I’d contort myself so that I could get a nipple in there. It wasn’t ideal. There were some looks from truck drivers. I’m not recommending it. But you’d be amazed at the things you do…. Still, while driving? No, no, no. That can’t work for so many reasons. Maybe the baby was in a sling? I can’t even picture it.
Anyway, I’m relieved they’re all OK. And hope that this is a lesson we can all learn from. Sometimes it’s best to do one thing at a time.
