This is my 4th go round at SXSW Interactive – and my first while PREGNANT!
SXSW® Interactive features five days of compelling presentations from the brightest minds in emerging technology, scores of exciting networking events hosted by industry leaders, the incredible new SXSW Trade Show and an unbeatable lineup of special programs showcasing the best new digital works, video games and innovative ideas the international community has to offer.
After enduring a day’s worth of sessions and soaking in the SXSW goodness – here are my 10 Pregnant Survival Tips at SXSW Interactive:
1.Women at SXSW Interactive
While the number of women attending is on the rise, it’s still a man’s world. Find other women and connect.
If you want a seat during a session, plan to arrive EARLY. The SXSW Interactive sessions are packed quickly and most end standing room only. Be prepared to be uncomfortable.
3. Hitch a Ride
This year SXSW Interactive has spread to nearly every surrounding hotel room, not just the Austin Convention Center. Chevrolet has car thru-out Austin with ads that say, Jump in if I’m empty. Take them up on the ride! Also the SXSW conference has designated buses and vans – use them.
Wear your walking shoes. You will walk miles over the course of 5 days. Regardless of #3 – you’ll still be climbing stairs, walking thru the convention center and limping thru hotels trying to find conference rooms.
5. Your Belly is a Conversation Piece
Use your belly as a conversation piece. It’s funny how people gravitate towards pregnant bellies.
6. Say No to Baby Brain
Absorb everything. Don’t let that baby brain get in the way. Take good notes, learn and meet new people.
7. Drink Water
Keep water with you. While some of the hotels have water out for you to slurp – keep a water bottle with you, all this walking can lead to easy dehydration.
8. Take It Easy
While there maybe 320 sessions to choose from on Saturday at SXSW Interactive – in reality, you’ll be able to make about 5.
9. Eat Regularly
Day 1, in the business of running around I forgot the eat and my body paid for it. Keep a snack with you if you don’t think you’ll make it to lunch. Beware, the lines are LONG for food at the Austin Convention Center – and the restaurants are crowded anywhere near SXSW.
Take this time to enjoy some you time before baby arrives. After your little one arrives, the whole business and technical side of yourself will take a break. Absorb it while you can. The information you gain at SXSW Interactive is cutting edge stuff!
