Caroline’s lucky. She’s married. (Well, considering she’s married to me, I suppose some might argue that point.) She’s healthy. She’s got great insurance and has a wonderful doctor who has the hots for her, takes good care of her. As such, she’s part of a demographic that has plenty of access to all the information needed to help make her pregnancy as safe as it can possibly be.
But what if she weren’t so lucky? What if she were a single mom and unemployed without great benefits? What if that situation prohibited her from seeking medical attention as often as she’d like? Well, if that were the case, then she’d be well served to turn to her cell phone and send out a text.
I just read about this great service over at Time called “text4baby.” Here’s how it works. Type the word “baby” along with your due date and text them to 511411 and — BOOM — sit back and wait for a reply. Here are some examples of what you might get:
Did you drink water today? Get plenty of water each day & more if it’s hot or you’re exercising. Keeping your body hydrated is important!”
“Talk to your Dr. about getting a flu shot. Pregnant moms & babies can get very sick from flu. For info call CDC at 800-232-4636.”
“Need free or low-cost health care for you & your baby? Your state has programs to help. Call 877-543-7669 to find out if you qualify.”
Text4baby has also been known to deliver urgent alerts. For example, this past fall, a text went out to pregnant women who use the service to warn them not to use sleep positioners, as they had been linked to infant deaths.
Since kicking off the program in February of 2010, text4baby has sent out over 9 million texts to 142,000 moms. But the program would not be the success that it is were it not for the different players who make it possible. Like Johnson & Johnson who has pledged millions of dollars of support over the next few years. And don’t forget the various wireless providers who allow the texts to be received free of cost.
So if you happen to be one of the pregnant women who is not in the best position to receive all the information about your pregnancy that you need — or if you know such a woman — what are you waiting for? There’s a great service out there for free. Because everyone wants your baby to be born a happy and healthy one!
