That Very First Photo (Fourth Edition)

Welcome to the world, little one!

I am so thrilled to present the fourth edition of That Very First Photo!

I love receiving these emails and reading your birth stories and looking at all your beautiful photos. The photos are always amazing but the birth stories in this edition seem particularly action-packed and thrilling.

No matter whether mom’s skin is blotchy, her hair is greasy and she’s got mascara dripping down to her knees, these photos are stunning. In fact, it’s the tired Mona Lisa-like smile that really hits me in the heart. And the babies! My gosh, the babies! Sweet little human beings captured taking their first few breaths of air.

Please enjoy this edition of That Very First Photo and, if you’ve got a photo you’d like to share post it on Babble’s Facebook page or email me your photo with the subject “First Photo” and a few sentences about the birth at monica bielanko at yahoo dot com.

  • Pure Love and Joy and Beauty 1 of 17
Pure Love and Joy and Beauty
This one comes from Katie who tells me "I wanted to share with you one of the first photos taken after my son's homebirth in March 2009. He was 21.5" and 8 lb 12 oz and born after only about 2 hours of hard labor + 45 minutes of pushing. His birth was such an overwhelming force and an amazing day in my life, and I was on the hormone high for weeks afterward! Right after he was born, I hesitated to show people the pictures because I had mascara running down my face and wasn't exactly feeling photogenic. Now, though, I look back on pictures of that day and see nothing but pure love and joy and beauty."
  • Our Little Miracle 2 of 17
    Our Little Miracle
Liisa Mackey says "This is a picture of me and my daughter, Elisabeth, as they placed her on my chest for the first time right after having a c-section. Hubby was sitting beside me telling me what they were doing with her while they did the APGAR tests and cleaned her up, and he took pictures so I could see them later on. When the nurses were done, the swaddled her, and walked right past hubby with her to place her on my chest. The gloved hand in the picture is the nurse's--she was helping me because I was groggy from some sedatives they had given me to keep me calm while the doctor stitched me up. The anesthesiologist took the photo. I am 42 and, after several years of trying, Elisabeth is our little miracle."
  • Pure Joy 3 of 17
    Pure Joy
This one comes from Jen Paur who says, "Rex is my first baby. I had a 6 hour labor with no intervention and delivered him on all fours. I was able to help guide him out with my hand and brought him to my chest immediately (a very fortunate and beautiful birth). I was SO SHOCKED by him. A whole animal just came out of me!! I kept looking around at everyone in the room, crying "OH MY GOD!! OH MY GOD!!" Everyone just laughed and laughed. It was a month before I could believe it. You can see my husband's hawaiian shirt just behind me. He says I was a picture of Pure Joy in that moment."
  • Carson Is Born 4 of 17
    Carson Is Born
This photo is from Jennifer Pugh who says "My husband and I decided to go all natural for our sons birth. After 30+ hours of no drugs and a lot of pitocin, he was ready to make his appearance. The coolest thing about his birth is my doctor allowed my husband to do most of the work so, HE got to hold him first. Then I got him. My only concern was whether he really had a penis or not. We named him Carson Bruce Timothy. He was 7 pounds, 9 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long.
  • Rachel and Adam, Jr. 5 of 17
    Rachel and Adam, Jr.
Rachel Fallon says "After 8 weeks of early labor and having to stop it, I had to be induced at 39 weeks! At 8lbs 12oz I was never so happy to see his beautiful blue eyes!!!"
  • That’s a Big Baby! 6 of 17
    That's a Big Baby!
Heidi Brown sent this one in and says "After three days of labor and never fully dilating I was finally taken for a C-section to have my 2 week over due,10 pounds 13 oz 24 inch long son. I was not able to hold him for over an hour, this was the first time I held him in recovery. I was so glad to finally have this late arrival. He is now 14, stick skinny, and taller than me!"
  • C-Section Averted At the Last Second! 7 of 17
C-Section Averted At the Last Second!
Erin says "This is a picture of me and my daughter right after my husband handed her to me. I delivered her in the OR, because they had rushed me in for an emergency c-section. My primary OB had already been called to another emergency and caught us in the hall. He told the doc who was accompanying me (also from his practice), 'If there is any way, you give her a chance to push that baby out. She doesn't want a c-section.' I had been so panicked and tearful that I was afraid to speak up, which isn't like me at all. I was so thankful he advocated for me. There was a team waiting right behind me to do the c-section if necessary, but I was able to push her out right there on the operating table in the OR. It was amazing. She was the most perfect thing I had ever seen. Still is."
  • True Love 8 of 17
    True Love
Dana Harrison says this photo is "me holding our daughter and from that moment on I knew that my life was complete. She has made me the happiest person in the world and theres no words to describe the feeling you get when you're able to hold your own child for the first time. I have this picture on my wall to remind me of that feeling, it always brings a smile to my face and a warmth in my heart...True Love."
  • Third Child, Second Daughter 9 of 17
    Third Child, Second Daughter
Meredith Carter sent in this photo and says "Here is the first photo with my third child and our 2nd daughter. The labor was super fast and I didn't really think I was in labor until I got to the hospital and was 8 cm! We didn't know the sex so it was very exciting! I had to edit the original because my husband got vag and all and I didn't think anyone really wanted to see that! Now I'm pregnant with our fourth and I hope to get another awesome first photo."
  • Makes Me Want Another 10 of 17
    Makes Me Want Another
Katie White says "This was my 3rd baby and first son. This was the first time I had a picture taken of my "first sight." My mom is a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and worked in L&D for 17 years before that, so she's been in the delivery room with me and my husband with each birth, but this was the first time she started taking pictures right away. It makes me so happy to remember this moment with a picture. Makes me want another. :)"
  • Not Bad For a First Timer! 11 of 17
Not Bad For a First Timer!
Emily Johnston says "Our birth was pretty uncomplicated, which was nice because I had a few complications in my pregnancy that sent me to the hospital a few times before he was finally born. After that, they decided to induce about a week early and he came in less than 11 hours! Not bad for a first timer - although given that he was 9lbs,2oz I had to push for almost three hours. I didn't have an epidural, and that combined with the Pitocin was tough, but as soon as I saw him I forgot it all. In fact, I was telling someone a few days later that it didn't really hurt that badly and my husband laughed so hard I thought we would all have to go back to the hospital!"
  • Born On The Fourth of July 12 of 17
Born On The Fourth of July
Charli Rahe says "Our daughter was born four days past her due date and I desperately didn't want her to be born on a holiday but she had other plans. Born on the Fourth of July our daughter was a little firecracker coming into this world, wide awake and very very alert. She is still our little firecracker and I can't imagine her being born on a different day."
  • He Is Really Here and We Really Did It! 13 of 17
He Is Really Here and We Really Did It!
Angelica Cancino says, "This was the first pictures of my baby Augustine. I have two older sons, twin boys, 5 years old but they were adopted at the age of two so August was my first birth. I was in labor for 12 hours with 2 hours of pushing tacked on to that. It was an all day affair for sure. I gave in and got an epidural during the last 3 hours because my body and mind were spent! Now being 7 1/2 months pregnant with my first girl, I find myself looking back on these pictures a lot because Augustine was my very perfect child in every way from the very beginning. My husband and I spent about a year and a half working with a fertility specialist to conceive him so he was just extra special in that sense. (And believe it or not, this little girl was a complete accident, no fertility specialist needed). I remember thinking when I saw him there in my arms, wow is this real, he is really here and we really did it. Thank you God!"
  • Surprise! It’s a Boy! 14 of 17
    Surprise! It's a Boy!
Amanda Helvey tells me "This is a photo of my second son seconds after birth definitely one of the best moments of my life. I wish I had one like this of my first son also but my husband was to busy falling on the floor after he was born to take a picture. I was told at 18 weeks that my first was a girl so when he was born we were very surprised."
  • Profound Relief and Absolute Awe 15 of 17
    Profound Relief and Absolute Awe
Natalie Thornburg says "I had a long, hard labor. I wanted to have a natural birth with my awesome midwife. But my labor started slowly a week past his due date when my son kick a hole through his amniotic sac. Fifty one hours labor after being given pitocin, having back labor, and pushing for two hours, my son was face forward and I ended up with an emergency C-section after midnight (also during an ice storm). A lot of the gory details of my labor are a blur, but I remember seeing Tyler's face that first time. I felt exhausted, but profound relief and absolute awe that he was finally here on the outside with me."
  • 9 lbs. 2 ounces! 16 of 17
    9 lbs. 2 ounces!
This image comes from Stephanie Buzzella who says "After 27 hours of back labor his poor little ( okay maybe a bit big @ 9lbs 2oz ) guy started to decline and we were in for a c section. This is our first photo together...mommy and baby were exhausted after both working so hard."
  • My Heart Was Complete 17 of 17
    My Heart Was Complete
This is from Shantel Hoffman who says "This photo was taken after they cleaned Brady up. When he was handed to me, I kept telling him "I love you" over and over. It was at that moment that I realized my heart was complete… I had my wonderful husband and our perfect baby boy."
