The Secret About Diapering Boys

On June 12, I had my baby. A beautiful, bouncing baby boy named Henry.

If you recall my previous diaper posts, I had never changed a single diaper before. Obviously, that has changed… and fast!  As a newborn, Henry obviously produces a lot of dirty diapers.  I bet I’ve changed close to 100 diapers in the last two weeks – my husband does most of the work!

So, although I am now a diaper changing expert, I certainly wasn’t when we brought Henry home. As a result, we had two major diapering gaffes almost immediately:

  • Peeing in the air:  Guess what?  When a little boy’s penis hits the cold air, he pees. Everywhere. And it can spray pretty far – hitting both you and baby in the face. I’ve begun to toss a washcloth over his boy bits to prevent this from happening.
  • Peeing out the top: Initially, I just pulled on Henry’s diaper. I didn’t realize that you have to, well, position the penis. If it’s pointing up and he pees, it will pee up… and out of the diaper.  If it’s pointing down, it will pee into the diaper,  and everything will be just fine.

I know that girls came with their own set of diapering challenge – wipe front to back! – but I never realized how tricky diapering boys can be.  Now that we’ve got these two tricks down, it’s been smooth(er) sailing in all things parenting-related.
