This Is What Happens When You're Raised By Lesbians

By ceridwen |

"Can gays even raise kids?"

Here’s Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa, speaking about being raised by two moms during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives:

Among others, Wahls was at this hearing to oppose House Joint Resolution 6 which would end civil unions in Iowa. Though posted to youtube last February, MoveOn.org blogged the clip yesterday and it’s gone viral for reasons you can understand. What a beautiful testimonial. What a tragedy that speeches like this need to be made.

Wahls says, “”my family isn’t really different from yours.” I’d say it’s only different in the sense that many of us can learn from your example.

  13. OccupyEquality says:

the video is great but it’s too bad that MoveOn used this video to con people into thinking that if they donated to MoveOn that donation would go for marriage equality, when MoveOn has never done anything for LGBTQ equality other than try to divert money from our organizations to their greedy pockets/

  14. Yale Cohn says:

Here’s our interview with Zach where about how his life has changed after this speech thrust him into the public eye, what it was like growing up with two mothers, what led him to decide to go and speak before the House of Representatives, and what other young people can do to fight for equality and speak out against intolerance.

  15. Kim says:

My favorite quote is NOT when he says his family is no different, but his last line when he says “The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero affect on the content of my character”!

  16. toni says:
