Unplanned Pregnancies: What To Expect When You Weren't ExpectingMonica Bielanko
At least 1 million married women in the U.S. become pregnant by accident every year, according to a report by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization that studies reproductive-health issues.
That’s a lot of unexpected pregnancies.
Seeing that positive pregnancy test can really blow your mind. In a split second, your entire life has changed. But, as you’re about to hear from two women, even if a baby wasn’t something you were expecting or even wanted, it may be the best thing that ever happened to you.
As Selena Kohng writes for Chicagoparent.com, she took a pregnancy test that confirmed that her suspicions, were in fact, correct. She was pregnant with her third child. She immediately freaked. “I snapped a pic of those two smug pink lines and e-mailed it to my husband with subject line “!!*$#&%^!!”. Within about 40 seconds, my husband called, voice cracking, and all I could eke out was “I know. I know. I know!” over and over.”
Kohng says she and her husband were just getting the hang of juggling two children. “When we finally managed to get our 3-year-old to stop stumbling into our room at night. When I’ve gotten used to being diaper bag-free and really, really enjoy it. Three just sounds so formidable, like it requires a caliber of motherhood that I don’t think I have just yet”.
Shelly Thomson-Blevins says two of her pregnancies were big surprises with very bad timing. Thomson-Blevins was on the verge of divorcing her first husband when they found out she was pregnant with their second son.
“We hung in there hoping this would bring us closer together… no. Luke was one when I finally packed up and left.”
Shelly had one more child, a daughter from a rebound relationship after the divorce. “We were not married nor did I ever want to marry him but my mother and his father really pushed us into getting married for the baby. So we got married one month before she was born and divorced almost exactly one year to the date later. I love all three of my kids more then the world and don’t know what I would do without them! So in the long run I am happy the way it all turned out.”
Kohng agrees, saying the miracle of life doesn’t wear off the second, third or fourth time around. “Last week I went to my first trimester ultrasound and saw the baby show off its amnio-gymnastic moves. And there’s just something about seeing them for the first time, isn’t there? It was in that moment, with goop on my belly, that I knew that Now had perfect timing after all.”
Two mothers experiencing very different marital circumstances both assure you that regardless of the unexpected pregnancies, they wouldn’t have it any other way. So if you’re experiencing a tough time, whether it’s within a happy marriage, a crumbling one, or you aren’t married at all, stay strong. When that bundle of joy is born, chances are you wouldn’t have it any other way either.
