Oh man! Worse nightmare ever!
A high-profile fertility clinic in Hong Kong admits to accidentally transferring two embryos into the wrong woman.
Holy crap! This isn’t just the worst case scenario for the woman who carried the wrong babies, but imagine how you’d feel if your embryos went to someone else!
An investigation shows the mistake was a result of human error as opposed to systematic failure. As the BBC reports, a junior embryologist neglected to read the label on the embryos before they were transferred in the wrong woman through IVF.
WTF? Isn’t that the first thing you do? In fact, if you do anything at all, make sure it’s reading the damn label!!!
Luckily the clinic realized the error very quickly. The embryos were taken out and discarded. Still, it’s super troubling that embryos had to be thrown away because of some idiot’s mistake. Can you imagine, though, if the clinic hadn’t realized the error until much later?
The woman whose embryos they were and the woman who received them have both received counseling and have been offered compensation, the clinic told local media. Victory ART Laboratory has been allowed to stay open after the council’s investigation decided it was a human error.
Not surprisingly, other pregnant women who have used the clinic say they are appalled by the medical error, with one saying she wants a DNA test once her baby is born.
Can’t say I blame her.
