Babble Best Picks:
Cloth diapers aren't always the most convenient or cheapest option, but it's a choice that's healthy for your baby and the planet. Plus, they've come a long way! Today you can find highly absorbent, easy-to-fit cloth diapers that are used exactly like disposables - only you throw them in the wash instead of the garbage. Plus, it's not an all-or-nothing decision. You can use hybrid options (which are biodegradable but disposable), or supplement your cloth diapers with disposables.
Yet all of these advances have given cloth-using parents one problem: too many diapers to choose from! Luckily, we tested 17 of the most popular cloth diapers - from prefolds to all-in-ones - to find the best of the best. Did we forget one? Nominate your favorite here.
BEST FIT FOR SKINNY BABIES | Oh Katy
Oh Katy is the newest diaper redesign on the market. (You may have previously known it as Katydid.) Another one-size diaper, the Oh Katy will easily grow from the time your baby is an itty bitty newborn (8 pounds) until he or she is potty trained (35 pounds) – and we mean that. While most one-size diapers are hard to adjust for the littlest of babies, the Oh Katy has unique “newborn hip snaps” to make the diaper snug around even the smallest legs. Not only is this perfect for newborns, but it’s the absolute best for older babies with a tiny waist and legs. It was hard to find a well-fitting diaper for our tall and skinny toddler tester, yet these did the trick.
One of the main differences between Oh Katy and other pocket diapers is that the pocket opening is in the front rather than the back. While the idea is to make unstuffing the liner easier (since poop usually settles toward the back of the diaper), we did find our little boys occasionally peed up into the pocket, causing a few leaks up top. It wasn’t a huge deal, especially considering the inserts are customizable enough to fold extra fabric where you need it. Plus, there were fewer blowouts up the back.
Wondering how Oh Katy differs from Katydid? The leg gussets are better lined with soft fleece, so that the edges won’t turn inward and leave any red marks. You’ll also find a larger variety of truly beautiful colors – the nicest colors we’ve seen.
