Top 50 iPhone Apps for Kids

About a week after I began using my iPhone, I was in love. I had a calendar with me at all times, and I was able to stay on top of my family's schedule - even though there are six of us! I had email access while I was out, so I wasn't constantly playing catch up with PTO business in the evening. Then I discovered apps! There are many apps to help busy moms manage their lives, but there are also just as many exclusively for kids. My children can watch videos, interact with their favorite characters, and practice letter-writing and math. No matter where my family goes, they can be entertained and I can have peace of mind knowing they're learning even while they're having fun.

In January 2009 I began a website, The iPhone Mom, dedicated to helping moms find apps that could do the same for them and their children. Since beginning the site, I've seen both the quantity and quality of useful apps for kids grow.

Babble.com asked me to put together a list of my Top 50 iPhone Apps for Kids. Here, in descending order, are my favorites and the ones I think you'll find most useful.

Oceanhouse Media creates officially licensed apps inspired by the works of Dr. Seuss. They have developed several games and camera applications, but the picture book apps are my favorite, with Dr. Seuss’s ABC topping the list. The stories come with narration that can be turned on and off, as well as sound effects. Illustrations are interactive, and if you tap on something, its name appears on the screen in a variety colors and texts, which makes for a fun way to learn the names of the wonderful things living in Dr. Seuss’ world. And don’t worry; Dr. Seuss apps stay true to the originally published versions.

  1. Now there is another App for that!
The PBS Show, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, is a featured show on the Mobile MUM App. Now my preschooler can pull up his favorite shows whenever he wants. And I dont feel guilty because all of Mobile MUMs programming is educational as well as entertaining. Mobile MUM takes the App experience to another level providing a ton of programming including; The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, Sid the Science Kid, Mighty Machines, Pajanimals, Animal Atlas and many more. Along with the awesome educational programming your kiddo gets to play some really cool games. The Mobile MUM App keeps my little Conner busy, busy and keeps me happy, happy.
