Best Kid-Friendly | Flip UltraHD
There’s no shortage of colorful, chunky camcorders aimed at kids, but let’s face it: Given the choice between their Fisher-Price model and your fancy, HD gizmo, kids are always going to choose the latter. Flip’s entry-level camcorder, the UltraHD, walks a nice middle ground between toy and serious camcorder: Your kids will have a blast with it, but you can take solace in knowing that that no one will laugh at you for using it. Like all Flip models, this one is user-friendly almost to a fault: You press the big red button to record up to one hour of 720p HD video, and that’s about as deep as your experience gets. My kids quickly filled the UltraHD’s meager 4GB hard drive with short, silly videos of their LEGO creations, Mom and I in mundane situations (“Look! Dad’s cooking!”), and, as if you’d expect anything more from three boys, one another’s bums. Audio and video quality varied wildly depending on lighting and background noise conditions, but thankfully, using the preinstalled FlipShare software, I could quickly free up the hard drive as needed.
