Best Bells + Whistles | Panasonic HDC-SDT750K 3D Camcorder
If you’ve been yearning to free your inner James Cameron and have a holiday bonus to burn, Panasonic’s HDC-SDT750K could be your new favorite toy. Though priced significantly higher than similarly full-featured 2-D cameras, the HDC-SDT750K includes a detachable lens addition that enables you to shoot in (cue dramatic music…) 3-D! Of course, being first to the party (presently, the HDC-SDT750K is the only 3-D camcorder targeted at general consumers) means that Panasonic still has some kinks to iron out – namely, the size and weight of the 3-D lens (it’s a whopper!) and the laborious calibration you need to perform every time you shoot in 3-D. Conversely, once you capture 3-D footage, getting both your videos and the glorious 5.1 channel surround sound to your 3-D-capable home theater is as easy as connecting an HDMI cable. It’s a bummer that you lose most of the pro-class 2-D features when you shoot in 3-D – including the ability to shoot 16:9 widescreen footage in full (1080p) HD – but the upside is that when you do shoot in 2-D, the results are on par with your favorite high-def TV show.
