10 Tips on How NOT to Take an Engagement Photo

I can still remember the day of my engagement. It was a weekend adventure for my then partner of 5 years and we had an amazing, romantic time. I was nervous about the idea of a wedding, but had no doubts this was the person I wanted to spend my life with and there was no hesitation to say “yes!”

If I had my own way, I would have skipped all the things we’re supposed to do when we get married like bridal showers and would have just eloped. Not because I wasn’t excited to share, but I am not a fan of being the center of attention and the whole idea of it made me nervous. We needed up having a low-key wedding with friends and family, which was perfect, but we skipped on traditional engagement photos.

I am not really one to get photos done of these important milestones so many others do. No engagement photos, no professional wedding photos, no maternity photos and I don’t see that philosophy for me changing. I do recognize it’s a common practice for so many people and there are some majorly talented photographers who can give you the most amazing images.

Getting photos done for your engagement can be a fun, memorable time with great images. If you’re planning yours, here are some tips on what not to do: click through and see 10 tips on how not to take an engagement photo:

  • Don’t Forget to Smile 2 of 11
    10-7

Getting engaged is supposed to be a happy, exciting time. You should make sure in your engagement photos that you convey your happiness and don't forget to smile. Or at least look like you kind of want to be there.

  • Don’t Show Off 3 of 11
    01-10

These photos should be flattering to both parties -- you can't have one side looking more on top than the other. This one does pretty much the opposite.

  • Don’t Go R-rated 4 of 11
    02-12

If you're wanting to share your engagement photos, and that's kind of the point of them, make sure they're PG.

  • Don’t Just Go Anywhere 5 of 11
    03-10

Unless this couple is totally into fishing or something, this location and pose is just awkward. I am all for unique locations, but make sure it's relevant to you guys and makes sense.

  • Don’t Fall Asleep 6 of 11
    04-10

People say that eyes are the window to the soul and if you're in love, we want to see them. This photo, which the photographer instructed the couple to look "relaxed" just makes even them seem bored by the image.

  • Don’t Forget to Look Around 7 of 11
    09-9

Check the background to make sure it's free from anything that may take away from the gorgeous image of the two in love.

  • Don’t Get Rebellious 8 of 11
    05-10

Yes, you're a grown-up in a grown-up relationship and you likely see each other without clothes on. Doesn't mean we want though though -- so keep in mind that grandma will be getting a copy of these and it's not the right time to push the boundaries.

  • Don’t Make it Awkward 9 of 11
    06-9

I don't know what's appealing about this photo unless this couple is crazy into shocking people and not being quite politically correct. I mean, the image of pushing someone down the Falls is bad enough, but in a wheelchair -- how does this show love? Don't make it awkward for anyone viewing your images.

  • Don’t Make the Double Take 10 of 11
    07-9

Yes, Photoshop is awesome and you can do some pretty fun things with it -- doesn't mean you should though. This image in particular is even more a "DON'T" because of the PDA and the peep show.

  • Don’t Forget the Pose 11 of 11
    08-11

We want these photos to show love and not like you already can't get along. Sometimes posing for photos can be awkward and you're not quite sure where to put your hands, but around the neck of your fiancee is not the place.
