7 of the Best Summer Love Songs

iStock_000012158921XSmallBefore you know it, summer will be over and we will be left with memories of our summer adventures — but it isn’t over quite yet. There’s still time for picnics, a family barbecue, and concerts in the park. There’s also some time for road trips which give way for serenading and duets with your spouse and showing the kids that their parents are still cool.

For each of us, the things that we associate with summer will vary. Ice cream, watermelon, and s’mores by the fireside. But sometimes it isn’t just an experience or an object that makes us think of summer — sometimes it’s a song. These 7 songs are synonymous with the summer season. Come winter, the sheer mention of them will have our minds wandering to warm days spent in the sunshine. Take a look at 7 of the best summer love songs:

1. “Summer Love” by Justin Timberlake

“I can’t wait to fall in love with you
You can’t wait to fall in love with me
This just can’t be summer love, you’ll see
This just can’t be summer love.” (Available for download on Amazon)

This summer I went to a Jay Z and Justin Timberlake concert with my husband and this is one of those songs that got people going. It’s a love song, but it’s not slow like most love songs. It’s catchy and makes you want to dance, or in my case wish you could dance.

2. “Summer Nights” by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John

“Summer loving had me a blast
Summer loving happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be…” (Available for download on Amazon)

It’s hard not to sing-along to any song that comes on from the movie Grease. “Summer Nights” is definitely one many of us have belted out the words to. It’s a classic and, to this day, appeals to all generations.

“Well-a well-a well-a, huh
Tell me more, tell me more…”

3. “Summertime” by Beyonce

“It was the summertime
When we fell in love it was the summertime
Heaven shined on us it was the summertime
Baby, there is nothing like the summertime, summertime” (Available for download on Amazon)

Perhaps you had a summer romance in your day. You met a guy or girl and the two of you hit it off. While some romances made it beyond the summer season, some fizzled. At any rate, Beyonce’s “Summertime” is a sweet song that tells a story about when a girl and her guy fell in love.

4. “Hot Fun in the Summertime” by Sly and the Family Stone

“Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
Hot fun in the summertime
First of the fall and then she goes back
Bye, bye, bye, bye there
Them summer days, those summer days” (Available for download on Amazon)

Referred to by Your Tango as an oldie but goodie, this song might take you back to your teenage years when summers entailed crushes and puppy love — the romances that were intense but short-lived, most often over by the time the morning bell rang for the first day of school. Summer had ended and so did your romance.

5. Wouldn’t it Be Nice?” by The Beach Boys

“Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older
Then we wouldn’t have to wait so long
Wouldn’t it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong” (Available for download on Amazon)

Wouldn’t it be nice if our parents understood? A song that might make you channel your inner teen and think of the days when you dreamed of being an adult, because in your mind everything would be so much easier. Love included.

6. “Summer Rain” by Carl Thomas

“So go ahead and make it rain
You bring the sunshine back again
So go ahead and make it rain
Your tender touches wash away my rain” (Available for download on Amazon)

A more soulful song, “Summer Rain” will make you want to stay indoors with your love.

7. “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince

Summer isn’t official until you play a little Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

“A little bit outta control, it’s cool to dance
But what about the groove that soothes
That moves romance?
Give me a soft subtle mix
An’ if it ain’t broke, then don’t try to fix it” (Available for download on Amazon)

While I wouldn’t classify this as a love song, it’s a fun song to groove and reminisce with your guy or girl. After all they did say that, “it’s like the summer’s a natural aphrodisiac.”
