10 Light Sweaters and Cardigans for Summer

During the summer I like to stick with shorts and dresses, so I find that throwing on a summer cardigan is a really easy way to change up my basic look. I usually find myself gravitating towards the light cotton, oversized sweaters after a long day at the beach. I’ve found that the open-knit and drape cardigans can be great for wearing to special events. Here, I’ve put together some of my favorite sweaters and cardigans that keep the madness (and heat!) of summer in mind by being both pretty and practical.

Buttercup Shrug 2 of 11
This summer shrug is a great statement piece that can go with even your most comfortable basics. On those days when you just want to wear your T-shirt and jeans again, put it on and pin up those locks for a cute summer style.
Buy it for $98 at Anthropologie.
Summerweight Cardigan 3 of 11
This lightweight cardigan is a great basic you can bring with you anywhere all summer. The soft and breathable cotton makes it cozy enough for the evening, but light enough that you won't be overheated. Toss it in your bag and be on your way for your day at the beach.
Buy it for $69.50 at Madewell.
Pointelle Cocoon Cardigan 4 of 11
This is a summer cardigan you can depend on all summer long. The beautiful detail makes it a great piece to have for both nice and casual events. Wear it to dress up a simple pair of shorts and a T-shirt, or make it the accent piece to your summer dress.
Buy it for $98 at Anthropologie.
Striped Blue Cardigan 5 of 11
Show off your stripes this summer with this navy and white cardigan that comes at a great price. Throw it on for a nautical look when you're spending the day at sea, or rock it at the fireworks show on the 4th of July.
Buy it for $19.95 at H&M.
Pullover Oversized Sweater 6 of 11
This light sweater is great for just throwing on after a day at the beach. The oversized fit will make it nice and cozy without having to opt for a sweatshirt. It also comes in black and striped.
Buy it for $19.95 at H&M.
Fine-Knit Cardigan 7 of 11
Bring along a summer drape cardigan that you can easily just toss in your bag. The drape style cardigan has been top of the trends because it can be so versatile — tie it in a knot or let it hang comfortably by your sides.
Buy it for $24.95 at H&M.
Striped V-Neck Sweater 8 of 11
Throw on a slouchy V-neck sweater that can provide you with just the right amount of warmth. This is a great type of sweater to layer over tanks that can peek out of the V-neck a bit.
Buy it for $24.99 at GAP.
Mesh Cardigan 9 of 11
I love the relaxed look of this summer cardigan. It has a circle hem which makes it hang longer in the back and 3/4-length sleeves. I like to think of it as summer's answer to the popular boyfriend cardigan from fall.
Buy it for $30.99 at GAP.
Reverse Print Cardigan 10 of 11
This might just be your favorite cardigan for summer since it is reverse-print and can go with pretty much anything. The details really make this cardigan, like the soft summer colors and subtle side slits.
Buy it for $34.99 at GAP.
Jukebox Jubilee Cardigan 11 of 11
Add a hint of retro charm to your wardrobe with this polka-dot cardigan. Wear it with capris for a '50s look, or have it be your accent piece to a solid-colored summer dress.
Buy it for $42.99 at ModCloth.
