Green, purple and gold are the official colors of Mardi Gras, and are said to date back to 1872 when Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanoff visited the New Orleans area. His house colors were green, purple and gold, and they've stuck with the holiday ever since.

My search for Mardi Gras fashion turned up a lot of peacock pieces — such as this swim cover up, leggings and full skirt. The beautiful bird exhibits the official colors of the season, plus there are plenty of peacocks who take up residence in the New Orleans area. This is one print that'e easy to wear year-round and is especially appropriate for Mardi Gras.

Last, but certainly not least, Mardi Gras just wouldn't be Mardi Gras without masks. The tradition started as a way for "krewe" members to stay anonymous while putting together floats for the parade, and grew to be an accessory that allows everyone to join in on the fun!
