7 Cheap (or Free!) Ideas for Getting Your Closet Spring and Summer Ready

The change of seasons always gives me the shopping itch! Unfortunately for my clothing budget, we just bought a new house so I’m mostly going to have to make do with what I’ve got in my closet. I did buy a new swimsuit (much needed after a couple of mine went transparent and saggy last summer), and I found a fantastic straw hat on clearance at TJ Maxx, but aside from those two things, I’ve only got a few bucks to spend on myself this spring and summer. Fortunately, I’m a big fan of DIY projects and shopping my own closet! I have plenty of things that could be reworked or just looked at with a new eye. Here are 7 ideas for updating your existing wardrobe for cheap (or free!) as the weather gets warmer!

    HM Denim Cutoffs

Cutoffs have been a summer staple for decades. There's something so perfectly laid-back cool about a good pair of cutoffs! They go with just about everything but I particularly love them with a straw hat and breezy white shirt for the beach. Grab a pair of jeans you don't wear much anymore (but still fit in the waist and bum), cut them to your desired length, and run them through the wash for the perfect amount of fray. Also, please note: It is totally fine to leave more than an inch on your in-seam. Go as long as you need to feel comfortable!

    Get them at H&M, $24.95

I had this white skirt in my closet that I rarely wore because it had some odd yellow spots. I finally gave it a little dip dye job and got a piece that I love out of it!

    Lace Shirt

We've all got a T-shirt or two lurking in our closet that we don't wear but can't quite bear to part with. (Mine is a neon v-neck that fits me perfectly but has some light staining. Ugh.) Cover up small stains, holes, or pilling with some lace with this fantastic DIY!

Button-downs get warm-weather friendly when you roll the sleeves, knot the hem, and add a skirt. Heavier maxi skirts can be paired with tanks and a summery hat. Wear your booties with a lightweight skirt or shorts. Spend time in your closet trying new pairings — you might find some new outfits for spring and summer that you love!
