Lately my husband and I have become obsessed with finding the perfect weekender bags for ourselves. I’m not sure why…it’s not like we’ve suffered from NOT owning one or two. But we got the idea in our heads and now we are stuck on it. Almost every time I glanced over Aaron’s shoulder at his iPad this weekend he was comparing bag options.
I recently went to Paris with my mom and sister for 4 days (with a day of travel on each end) and I almost bought a weekender bag before I left. As I was cramming six days worth of outfits into the only (tiny!) bag I own that qualifies as a carry-on I had myself a good kicking over the fact that I walked away from that weekender! They’re super handy for shorter trips (or longer, if you’re a ninja packer!) and often fit in the overhead compartment. Perfect!
What to look for in an ideal weekender bag:
Sturdy construction. If it seems at all delicate, walk away! I’ve seen a few weekenders that were super pretty but seriously lacking in practicality and sturdiness. This bag has to survive your trunk, rough baggage handlers, the overhead compartment or possibly those awful luggage carousels at baggage claim. You need a bag that can get thrown around!
Pockets. I’m a big believer in pockets for everything, but they are particularly important in luggage. You don’t want your car keys, passport or dramamine sliding down and getting lost in the depths of your bag. You’ll find yourself frantically digging and having to pull your carefully packed skivvies out at the worst possible time (this is experience talking).
Handles. If at all possible, you want TWO sets of handles–a short double set and a longer strap. This gives you several different options for carrying so that your shoulders and hands don’t get too worn out.
