Easy DIY Ombre JeansKayla Moncur
A few weeks ago, I pinned this pair of ombre jeans on Pinterest. Every time I scroll through my pins, it catches my eye all over again. I love the look! The more I stared at them, the more I realized I could probably give it the old DIY try. I’ve got a pair of black jeans that I don’t wear very often anymore, so I had the perfect canvas to get started! Just add a little water, bleach, and pins, and you’ve got all you need for a great pair of DIY ombre jeans!
Roll Up Your Sleeves 1 of 11
You can do this!
Protect Yourself 2 of 11
Since this project involves bleach, you'll want to wear an apron and do it outside, if you can. Easter apron optional.
Gather Your Materials 3 of 11
You'll want a large bowl or bucket, bleach, pins and a pair of black jeans. In this case, cheaper is better! High-quality jeans won't release the dye nearly as easily. My pair cost $7.80 at Forever 21.
Try On and Pin 4 of 11
Put on your jeans and pin where you want the ombre to start. I aimed for just above my knee.
Add Pins 5 of 11
Starting at my knee pin I added pins every 2 inches down the legs of my jeans. If you're feeling brave (or lazy) then you can skip this part and eyeball it when you're dipping in the bleach.
Get Them Wet! 6 of 11
Get your jeans wet! The water acts as a conduit for the bleach to ensure a more even bleaching. If you put them in dry then they may come out a little splotchy.
Mix Your Bleach 7 of 11
Add 3 parts water to 1 part bleach in your bowl or bucket and get yourself a chair.
Get Dipping! 8 of 11
Put your jeans in the bleach. For 30 seconds, agitate your jeans into the bleach between the first and second pins. I used my kids' wooden toy mallet to push down any areas that tried to bubble up. Double the time as you move down the pins. So you'll agitate between the 2nd and 3rd pints for a minute, two minutes between the 3rd and 4th pins, four minutes between the 4th and 5th pins, etc. The movement will help you get a nicely blurred ombre effect.
Keep Dipping 9 of 11
I had my phone run a stopwatch while I dipped to help me track time.
Rinse and Launder 10 of 11
I gave my jeans a quick hosing before throwing them in the washing machine on cold.
