From My Closet: 30 Chambray and Oxford Outfit Ideas

One glance at the hundreds of outfits I’ve photographed for my blog over the past three years and it’s clear: I’m a huge fan of blue button front shirts. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t wear a chambray or oxford top from my closet. Here’s a look back at some of my favorite ensembles with chambray and oxford tops, with hopes that these outfit ideas can help you create new outfits with what’s currently in your own closet!

  • With White Jeans 2 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.32.40 AM

This is one of those classic outfit ideas that I repeat time and time again. Try pairing an oxford top, navy blazer and white jeans with cognac accessories.

  • With a Striped Skirt 3 of 28

A dark chambray top looks great paired with burgundy and dark brown tones. You can also try knotting the end of your top with a slim-fitting skirt as pictured for a new twist on an old top.

  • With Red Cords 4 of 28

This is the same outfit styled for fall and summer. Oxford tops look great paired with red and camel.

  • With Mustard Jeans 5 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.14.08 AM

My light chambray top and mustard jeans are a match made in heaven. I've worn it with a quirky animal sweater, and with a bohemian-inspired necklace and boots.

  • With Pastel Jeans 6 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.27.55 AM

I love a good mix of pastels year-round and an oxford top is the perfect starting point to create this kind of look.

  • With Tie Dye, Floral or Shorts 7 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.22.15 AM

Three outfit ideas for a sleeveless chambray top - try it with tie dye jeans for a rock-n-roll vibe, with a floral pencil skirt for work, or tie one up over high waisted shorts for a summer BBQ.

  • With a Crochet Skirt 8 of 28
Screen shot 2013-08-04 at 12.17.07 AM

Another one of my personal favorites - there's just something so harmonious about the masculinity of a chambray top paired with a feminine crochet skirt or shorts.

  • With a Black Motorcycle Jacket 9 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 1.01.23 AM

An easy outfit recipe to try at home: pair a light chambray top with dark denim, black boots and a black motorcycle jacket.

  • With a Full Skirt 10 of 28
Screen shot 2013-05-13 at 12.17.07 AM

Chambray looks great with any florals, but especially when the florals are in a feminine, full-skirted shape.

  • With Southwest Prints 11 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.26.20 AM

Chambray gets a southwest vibe when paired with a tribal printed skirt or shorts and casual brown footwear.

  • With a Tweed Blazer 12 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.27.21 AM

Replace your usual collared shirt with a chambray option under a tweed blazer this winter.

  • With a Velvet Blazer 13 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.44.35 AM

Chambray gets the ultimate feminine makeover when paired with a velvet blazer, sparkly necklace and pleated skirt.

  • With a Citron Skirt 14 of 28

Inspired by a store mannequin, I paired my chambray top with a citron skirt and necklace.

  • With a Pumpkin Blazer 15 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.40.55 AM

A pumpkin blazer and navy pencil skirt take on a more casual vibe, thanks to the chambray shirt underneath.

  • With a Sundress 16 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.08.11 AM

An oxford top makes a great cardigan when tied over a breezy sundress in the spring and summer.

  • With a Striped Cardigan 17 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.40.07 AM

This outfit is from three years ago but I still love the basic idea. I think I'll try it again with white jeans this spring.

  • With Gray and Cognac 18 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.58.50 AM

An oxford top looks dashing when paired with gray tweed fabrics, cognac accessories, and a gold brooch.

  • With Other Layers 19 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.28.17 AM

I think this outfit would be even better if my blazer was longer than my shirt, but I wanted to share the fun idea of wearing your chambray top as an open layer between a striped t-shirt and a navy blazer.

  • With Denim Shorts 20 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.24.32 AM

When mixing denim on denim, I like choosing two dramatically different colors like this dark top and light blue (almost white) shorts. Bohemian-inspired accessories, optional.

  • With a Scarf 21 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.46.14 AM

A pencil skirt gets a casual makeover with an oxford top and flat boots. This is also showing an easy way to wear a scarf - the belt keeps it nicely in place.

  • With More Denim 22 of 28
Screen shot 2013-10-01 at 12.00.31 AM

More denim on denim, and again the two denim colors are contrasting colors. A cognac (faux) leather jacket always looks great over chambray, and logo sneakers finish it off.

  • With a Sweater and Shorts 23 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.07.58 AM

There's something so preppy about a sweater and oxford top paired with cotton shorts. Try it in your closet this spring.

  • With a Brocade Skirt 24 of 28
Screen shot 2013-09-02 at 11.36.21 PM

Brocade pieces look great with both oxford and chambray fabrics. Just add feminine shoes and a statement necklace to pull it all together.

  • With a Mustard Sweater 25 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.40.59 AM

Oxfords and chambray tops pair well with pretty much any color. You can try all the possible combinations in your closet - this mustard pairing was my personal favorite from my own closet.

  • With a Tuxedo Blazer 26 of 28

This idea inspired by Olivia Palermo. I tried a tuxedo blazer over a denim on denim look, and tied it altogether with matching black and white contrast flats.

  • With More Pastels 27 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.40.14 AM

Another pastel look from a couple years ago. This top is technically a blue collared shirt, but an oxford or chambray top would look equally fabulous with this outfit.

  • With a Puffer Vest 28 of 28
Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 12.35.16 AM

Last but not least, wear your winter whites proudly with an oxford top and plaid puffer vest.
