How to Wear a Menswear Inspired Vest | Get the Look

Menswear has surely taken over our blogs, from street style to life style, starting with a deep rooted love for boyfriend sweaters, jeans, and of course vests. After browsing some of my favorite looks on Pinterest, I decided to try the menswear inspired look myself. I purchased this vest last September while attending NYFW. We took short train ride over to Brooklyn for pizza and ended up at Beacon’s Closet, a fairly inexpensive thrift shop well known for its hidden designer treasure. While I didn’t find higher end pieces, I did find a vest that I had tailored to fit perfectly. I’ve just had yet to wear it. The key to making this menswear trend work is to add feminine touches.

Here are a few tips that will help you wear this super hot trend.

Loving the menswear trends but not sure how to wear it? Check out these tips these super stylish bloggers on how to perfect the look!

Tip #1: Always go soft. Cassandra wore a loose blouse with her vest and went light on her jewelry in order to make this manly style very feminine.

Tip#2: Mix trends. Wearing a pair of leopard print shoes adds a bit of boldness and showcases the quirkiness of her style.

Tip #3: Accessorize carefully. Wearing something as simple as red suede pumps elevates this look to instant chic status. From the red shoes to the multi colored clutch, this look is anything but boyish.

Tip#4: Do not forget the details. The buttons on this vest make it more feminine. If your vest has plain or covered buttons, a quick change works to enhance the look of your piece.

Tip #6: Don't be afraid to go overboard and experiment either. Wearing a menswear inspired vest is masculine, but pairing it with a classic Chanel bag makes this look all woman.

Tip#7: Wear your hair down. Most men can't do that, now can them? Master this look and make it yours by doing the one thing that makes us look extremely feminine long(er) hair. Then again if I had curls like Kelly, I wouldn't ever want to wear my hair up up.

TIP #8: Make sure your beauty routine  and details still says girly so that you can wear more than one menswear inspired piece at a time. Here I have on boyfriend jeans, an oversized sweater, and the vest, but my eye make up is a soft smoke and I have a soft up-do that helps to make this look very feminine. The heels also assist, of course.

One thing we all had in common was that our vests were various shades of gray. It's a bit more fun than black, but it's neutral enough to wear with almost everything. Like I mentioned in tip #4, I would change the buttons to a jewel or gold tone if you wanted a little extra glam.

Whenever I see this trend, 9 out of 10 times I see it paired with boyfriend jeans. Maybe it is the whole "menswear" thing or simply the comfort of this style, but a slim fit boyfriend jean (or a colored denim like the one seen on Coco & Kelly) seems to be a popular choice. I prefer a dark wash (though Maternity styles are limited), but just about any will do.

A bold color or a fun print takes a menswear look to the next level. I'm obsessed with the red pumps seen on Penny Pincher Fashion, so I found these red suede pumps with a price that's just as stunning.

    Available at ShopBop, $70
