I absolutely love J Crew. They almost always have impeccable styling and everything is made of amazing fabrics that I just want to snuggle. However, my budget is more along the lines of Forever 21 so I generally use J Crew as inspiration rather than a shopping destination.
J Crew’s fall lookbook has several fantastic looks that I wouldn’t mind snagging for myself. I particularly love this denim-on-denim ensemble with oxfords and that fantastic two-tone coat. If you buy the entire outfit through J Crew, though, you’ll end up paying close to $1200. With a little bit of digging I found great alternatives to every piece and the total came in at significantly less, which means you can be stylish AND still pay for food this month. Win/win!

The denim-on-denim look takes a comfy casual backseat to that amazing coat!

I am a total believer in investing in good denim. However, I don't think of distressed, whiskered jeans as an investment piece. Even if they're still trendy in five years I'm not sure I'll still be feeling young enough at that point to WANT to pull it off. I'd rather spend my pennies on a good pair of dark wash denim and go cheap on the destroyed look.

In this case I actually do think you should consider splurging on the Ray Bans! Last year I saved up my pennies and finally bought myself a nice pair of sunglasses and I have become a believer. The quality and eye protection is SO much better than the $10 pairs I've been wearing for years! However, if you're pinched, you can get the classic Wayfarer look for WAY less (and in cool materials- this pair is bamboo!). Just be sure to check and make sure the glasses provide good eye protection.

I was a little worried I wouldn't find any coats anywhere near as cool as J Crew's amazing B&W contract collar one but I ended up having the opposite problem. Black and white is everywhere this year! This Bebe one is my favorite though. The gold details echo the buttons on the original and I'm a total sucker for an asymmetrical zip.
