Stretch Your Winter Wardrobe: Warm Up with Shorts

IMG_6936

It is right about this time every year that I become increasingly weary of my winter clothes and start longing for spring. The bad news is we still have at least another month of very cool weather, so it isn’t quite time to pack up the coats and scarves. One way that I mix things up when I start to get into this rut is pulling out all my summer shorts and styling them for cool weather.

The number one way to stay warm while wearing shorts in the cooler months is adding a pair of thick tights underneath. It’s amazing how a simple pair of tights can give the shorts a distinctly different look! I always pair my winterized shorts with a cozy sweater for extra warmth.

The shorts and tights combination suddenly breathes new life into my winter wardrobe that was becoming a bore. It’s a polished look that you can wear anywhere while staying comfortable and warm. Plus, it’s a great way to get the most out of your entire closet.

Try these three ways to wear tights with shorts in the winter:

1. Pair colored tights with neutral clothing items to add a little excitement to your outfit. My favorite combination is rust colored tights with beige shorts or mustard yellow tights with navy shorts. So many possibilities!

2. For high-waisted shorts, stick  a tucked blouse or sweater in to keep the look neat and put-together.

3. For a boho look, choose cuffed denim shorts. Pair them with a flowing floral or white blouse and clogs to complete the outfit.

My go-to winter tights: $9.95 from H&M

Similar high-waisted shorts: $49.99 from Modcloth

Do you have any tried and true ways to change up your winter wears when the cold months seem to drag on?
