What to Wear to an Oscars® Party

I am literally counting down the days till the Oscars®: the stars, the dresses, Ellen, the awards, the drama, and the parties! Before the winners and losers are rubbing elbows at the Vanity Fair party, you might be rubbing elbows with your favorite friends in your living room. Oscars® parties are fun because you can make predictions, see who wins, and have interesting conversations when their awarding Oscars to the the less exciting categories. But let’s get to the important question! What to wear to an Oscars® party! As you are prepping for your night, there are two questions you need to ask.

First, has your hostess given you info on what to wear? I have been to parties where you have to dress like your favorite best picture nominee. You could wear glitzy 1970′s apparel in homage to American Hustle. If you loved The Wolf of Wall Street you could wear suits for the boys, and well, not much for the gals. Or get really creative, and wear nautical inspired clothes for Captain Phillips. (Brooke’s got some great tips if you need some, read her article here on Nautical Inspired Fashion.) Some parties will make a red carpet moment at the entrance, and have everyone wear their most glamorous items. This is when you can go to the nines! Anything that might be overdressing the rest of the year, is a-okay here. And still other parties might just keep it casual, and in that case I still recommend adding a little glamour to your outfit. Even small touches can make the night feel a little more magical, and make you feel like you’re part of the Hollywood scene. Awards, the drama, and the parties! Before the winners and losers are rubbing elbows at the Vanity Fair after party, you might be rubbing elbows with your favorite friends in your living room. Oscars® parties are fun because you can make predictions, see who wins, and have interesting conversations when they’re awarding Oscars® to the the less exciting categories.

The second question is how much fun do you want to have? You can play it safe or you can go all out. Only you can answer this question. If I was going to sway you either way, you guessed it, I would take advantage of the glitz of the night.

1. Vintage Glam

My first outfit is all in. I found this dress at an estate sale. It’s a vintage gown, and there aren’t very many places I can wear it, but an Oscars® party is one of them. The actual Academy Awards® are another, but I wasn’t invited this year, maybe next year.

Purchase a similar dress at Nordstrom.com for $298.

2. The Charming Ingenue

The second outfit is a step down from the full-length gown, but just as charming and Oscars® party worthy.

You can purchase a similar one at Asos for $143, and the shoes can be purchased at ShoeDazzle.com for $59.99.

3. Casual Elegance

And the last outfit is for a more casual look. If you’re going for a more comfortable look, you can choose an outfit inspired by the guys’ go-to outfit, the tux. Even if you’re going for a more casual look, you can stay in the spirit of the awards show by adding sparkly earrings.

You can purchase a similar pair at Banana Republic for $35, or a great pair of sparkly shoes like these ones from Kate Spade for $328.

Whatever you decide to do this coming Sunday evening, I hope you make it special. So pull out those rhinestone earrings or sparkly top and shine!
