12 Yahoo! Products That Are Being Axed

Yahoo! has named 12 products that they soon will be axing as they are “keeping their focus on what’s next.” I guess it just makes good business sense to work on your strengths and not your weaknesses, but we are sure seeing a lot of products from not only Yahoo!, but Google too that are hitting the chopping block (such as the death of Google Reader).

So what are these 12 products that Yahoo! is killing off? Here they are:

  • Yahoo! Axis 2 of 13

    Yahoo! Axis was a desktop web browser extension and mobile browser for iOS devices created and developed by Yahoo! As of June 28, 2013, Yahoo! will no longer be supporting this product.

  • Yahoo! Browser Plus 3 of 13

    Yahoo! Browser Plus was described as...

    Yahoo! BrowserPlus is software that lets you do more with your web browser. BrowserPlus makes it easy to install and use web plugins for a richer experience.

    As of  June 28, 2013 - Yahoo! Browser Plus is no longer being supported.

  • Citizen Sports 4 of 13

    Yahoo! acquired Citizen Sports in 2010.  Citizen Sports had a range of real life and fantasy sports products.

    As of June 28, 2013 Yahoo! Citizen Sports is no longer operational.

     

  • Yahoo! WebPlayer 5 of 13

    As of June 30, 2013 - Yahoo! Webplayer will no longer load.  If your site used Yahoo! Webplayer, Yahoo! suggests you locate and remove the following line in your code:

    FoxyTunes as of July 1, 2013 is dead.  

  • Yahoo! RSS Alerts 7 of 13

    Yahoo! RSS Alerts users (no longer active as of July 1, 2013) - try using Keyword News alert

  • Yahoo! Neighbors Beta 8 of 13

    Starting July 8, 2013, Yahoo will be pointing you to use Yahoo! Local Search since Yahoo! Neighbors Beta is no longer.

    Altavista use to be huge! Then Google happened. As of July 8, 2013, Altavista will vanish. 

  • Yahoo! Stars India 10 of 13

    Yahoo! Stars India will vanish on July 25, 2013. No fear, Yahoo! still has Yahoo! India OMG!.

  • Yahoo! Downloads Beta 11 of 13

    As of July 31, 2013 Yahoo! Downloads will no longer support 3rd party downloads. It will continue to offer downloads of Yahoo! products.

  • Yahoo! Local API 12 of 13

    On September 28, 2013, all Yahoo! Local API documentation will also be removed from the Yahoo! Developer Network portal.

  • Yahoo! Term Extraction API 13 of 13

    There is no more direct access to Yahoo! Term Extraction API. As of  September 28, 2013, developers will be required to go through YQL.

Yahoo! announced these discontinued products on their Tumblr site. Tumblr was purchased by Yahoo! in May.
