If you’ve scrolled down to the bottom of a page of search results on Google lately, you may have seen a new feature: In Depth Articles.
Google explained the feature in a blog post.
“To understand a broad topic, sometimes you need more than a quick answer. Our research indicates perhaps 10% of people’s daily information needs fit this category — topics like stem cell research, happiness, and love, to name just a few. That’s why over the next few days we’ll be rolling out a new feature to help you find relevant in-depth articles in the main Google Search results.”
Here’s how the “In Depth” search results look, when I searched for “Food Allergies.”
When I started writing online full-time in 2007, the standard article clients requested was around 750 to 1000 words. Today, most clients want articles that are only 350 words. This is because most folks believe today’s web user to be incredibly distracted, running off to post to social networking sites and ignoring an article if it’s too long. In fact, the rules of web content today say “less content, more images” and suggest that an article needs to explain everything right in the first paragraph so people will get all the info before they click away.
As a writer, it’s pretty exciting to see search engines like Google embracing long form content again. Here’s hoping that Google continues to focus on good content!
