Mamavation Launches New Conference: ShiftCon

SHIFTMamavation, the health and wellness website and blogger network, announced today the launch of a brand new conference for bloggers and content creators, ShiftCon.

Ostensibly the first “international eco/wellness social media conference,” ShiftCon offers programming specifically targeted to bloggers and social media folks who are working toward healthy, sustainable living and fighting against things like GMOs and other changes to our food supply.

In an email from the founder, Leah Segedie (full disclosure: I am proud to call Leah a friend), she states:

ShiftCon social media conference is for bloggers who write about wellness, health, the environment, food, fitness and natural living. ShiftCon was created as a way to get bloggers together to inspire, share ideas on how to be an effective communicator, allow one another, network with brands that support our ideals, learn from experts and organize our efforts into activism. Themes are sustainable farming practices, toxic-free living, fair trade, food activism, the food supply, the environment, and disease prevention.

The conference will be held about a year from now, in Los Angeles.

Of course, one element that makes conferences like this affordable are sponsors. But ShiftCon is being very strict about who can sponsor their conference:

We also have special requirements for sponsors that communicate our values as a group:

Because health is such an important aspect of our conference, we are only considering sponsors that fit within these parameters:

  • Food Related Sponsors: No genetically modified ingredients (GMOs), synthetic dyes, additives or preservatives, trans fats, synthetic nitrates, or MSG
  • Personal Care Sponsors: No parabens, petroleum derived synthetics, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, propylene glycol, 1-4 dioxane, formaldehyde, triclosan or aluminum
  • Cleaning Product Sponsors: No toxic VOCs, phthalates, petroleum derived synthetics/synthetic chemicals, 1-4 dioxane, formaldehyde, optical brighteners, or triclosan
  • Baby and Child-Related Sponsors: We encourage manufacturers to have “green guard” certification with furniture & mattresses brand. We also accept brands that follow practices of the European Union. Diapers should be free of chlorine & dioxins. Cloth diapers must not be covered with PVC. Toys must be free from lead. All additional requirements are listed in categories above.

If you’re interested in speaking at ShiftCon, you can apply here.

With the recent closure of several blogging and social media conferences such as Blissdom and EVO holding a new conference might seem risky, but it is clear these sorts of niche conferences are getting more popular and doing quite well (such as the Food Allergy Bloggers Conference being held in Las Vegas this weekend). As we all wait breathlessly for an announcement for the BlogHer Conference for 2014, we can take comfort in these smaller and more focused conferences cropping up everywhere.
