10 of My Favorite Baby Milestones

Last night as my husband was watching sports (booooring), I sat next to him on the couch flipping through old photos on my iPhone. Initially, I was looking for a certain photo for a blog post that I was doing, but then I got sucked into the vortex of tiny Fern cuteness and I could barely stand it. Seeing all the changes that she’s experienced throughout the past 18 months is kind of insane when I stop to think about it. She has gone from a little eating/sleeping/crying/pooping blob (albeit a very cute blob) to a walking/talking/full-of-personality toddler. When did that happen? I realize it didn’t just happen in one day or anything, but still… it flew by!

Here are a few of my favorite baby milestones from Fern’s first chunk of life. Most of them aren’t the “big” milestones you’d typically think of either. They’re more of the little moments that have a special place in my heart.

Sometimes it's the littlest baby milestones that are the most memorable.

  • Her "birth" day 2 of 11

Obviously this is my favorite milestone of all. Some might not consider birth to be a milestone, but oh, it is! We both worked together as a team for Fern to come into this world (you can read my birth story here), and it was a beautiful and momentous occasion that changed my life forever — the day I became a mama.

  • When she figured out peek-a-boo 3 of 11

When Fern first learned to play peek-a-boo, she never wanted to stop. She would insist on hiding behind my hand over and over again, all day every day, and it was the funniest thing!

  • First swing ride 4 of 11

Once she realized she could go high and fast, she never wanted to stop.

  • First time in a highchair 5 of 11

The look on her face says it all: pure joy. Who knew siting in a highchair could be so exciting? She was so proud of herself.

  • Crawling! 6 of 11

Watching her learn to crawl was a riot! It was particularly enjoyable to see our dog realize that her life was about to be forever changed by the toddler who would never leave her in peace again.

  • Learning to walk 7 of 11

Watching this little one learn to wobble, then walk, and then run has been pure entertainment.

  • Her first snow experience 8 of 11

The progression of her facial expressions as she took in her first experience with snow was so cool. First she was curious, then perplexed, then cautious, then blissfully happy ... especially when she realized that she could eat it!

  • Her first birthday 9 of 11

Yay! We made it through her entire first year, and I kept her alive and well, and didn't die of sleep depravation! Certainly a milestone worth celebrating.

  • Her first trip to Disneyland 10 of 11

This has probably been one of my most favorite moments with Fern to date. Seeing Disneyland through the eyes of a 14-month-old was truly priceless. Everything was magical, and I truly did feel like we were at "the happiest place on Earth" ... especially when she met Minnie. It was unbearably sweet!

  • Learning to stop and smell the roses 11 of 11

Her grandpa taught her to smell flowers, and now it is one of her favorite pasttimes.
