12 Things Toddlers Do Better Than Everyone Else

Lately, I am learning that toddlers have a skill set all their own. These skills may not include things that can be added to a resume one day, but they are definitely unique skills nonetheless. For all their struggles in trying to figure out the world and gain new skills, there are quite a few things that toddlers do better than anyone else.

Toddlers do entropy like nobody's business. Turning order into disorder is kind of their jam.

Last night, we took our daughter to a jazz night with my husband's grandma. A bunch of her friends were there, and to see these senior citizens "oohing" and "ahhhing" over our child, you would think it was the second coming. And it's like she knew! She danced 'til she dropped and gave her sweetest smile to anyone and everyone who came over to say hi. By the end of the night she had earned herself a stuffed puppy dog, a purple bracelet, and a vanilla ice cream cone from the senior citizens working to earn her favor.

Toddlers are a sneaky lot. Leave your keys or your morning muffin sitting out unattended for even a moment and they will find it and eat it (yes, both the key and the muffin toddlers love eating non-food items). My toddler has stolen my iPhone right out of my pocket without my noticing on multiple occasions.

It doesn't matter how tired a toddler is, they have this superhuman ability to dig deep and find these extra stores of energy that simply aren't possible for us mere mortals. Toddlers are like the Energizer bunnies of the human race. They just keep going!

"Hey! I'm a toddler, you're a toddler, let's be friends! I know we just met, but wanna hold hands and share a popsicle?" I kind of wish adults did this too.

Whoever came up with the phrase "an elephant never forgets" obviously never spent any time around toddlers. On a recent family vacation, my daughter experienced chocolate for the first time; it was inadvertent as we gave her a bite of a banana chocolate chip muffin. One of us must've mentioned the word "chocolate" and from then on she has pointed out any and every chocolate item that she encounters. "Cho-chate! Cho-chate!" How do they remember these things?

No matter how hard you try, your belly will never be as cute as a toddler's. It's just one of life's little truths.

The toddler is an expert at finagling. When they find something they want, they will stop at nothing to get it.

Dead animals, someone else's pre-chewed gum, that cheerio that's been under the couch for God knows how long... the toddler seeks them out with their special toddler sonar for gross things. It truly is a special skill and any gross thing will be found and inevitably touched or eaten.

You let a curse word slip and undoubtedly your toddler will hear you. And if you even so much as whisper the word "ice cream," there will be no wriggling out of dessert that night. Toddlers hear EVERYTHING. Seriously... ev.ry.thing.

  • 11. Bouncing back 12 of 13
12 Things Toddlers Do Better Than Everyone Else

Toddlers have a truly special knack for bouncing back from just about anything within 6.7 seconds. It's science. So what if they just ran into a wall, had the most epic tantrum, or puked on their shoes. Within a matter of a few seconds they've moved on to the next thing as though it never happened. It's pretty impressive.

  • 12. Turning exasperation into a smile 13 of 13

I think this goes back to the fact that toddlers are incredibly charming, but whatever the case, they have a wonderful ability to make you smile even when you feel like screaming out in frustration. True, your toddler might've just tried out their new finger paints directly on your dining room table, but the impish little smile they wear while they look up at you covered in paint can't help but make you smile. It's truly a skill.
