I’m not gonna mince words here: I’ve never thought minivans were cool — until now. It was one of those things I swore up and down I would never (seriously never) own in my pre-kid days. … And then I drove the 2014 Honda Odyssey … and it turned my entire worldview (or minivan view at least!) upside down.
My family was invited to drive the 2014 Honda Odyssey around for a week and, immediately, my husband started teasing me about being a soccer mom, but after a week of driving it around?
I get it. I’m a believer, a true convert. Minivans are awesome! Yes … I really just said that. I may have even told my husband that I would agree to his request for a third child if he bought me one. Just maybe.
There was just so much space and so many features that made me fall in love. I never knew I needed a minivan, but now I see the light — especially when it comes to the holiday season. Minivans and the holidays go together like peas and carrots … mac & cheese … or, if you’re my daughter, like ketchup and broccoli (I know, kids are weird).
Here are a few reasons I fell in love with my Honda Odyssey for the holidays:
1. Not Getting Lost on Trips Over The River and Through The Woods 1 of 11
I pretty much have the worst sense of direction in the history of ever. It would almost be funny if it weren't truly that bad. This navigation system means no more getting lost on those holiday trips over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house -- and possibly less holiday fighting because I got lost ... again. Festive dashboard is optional.
2. So Many Cup Holders for Festive Holiday Beverages 2 of 11
I cannot even begin to tell you how awesome the cup holder situation is in this van. The 2014 Honda Odyssey means never having to fight over cup holders again — peace on Earth! Perfect for all those festive drinks I consume during the Christmas season. And the compartment in between the front seats that ever-so-perfectly fit this container of Christmas cookies: serendipitous.
Also, totally unrelated, but you know the place in between the driver and passenger seat that fits my purse like it was meant to go there? It definitely made me feel a ton more holiday cheer since my purse wasn't getting trampled on by my fellow front seat passenger.
But Seriously You Guys…the Cup Holders 3 of 11
OK. But, seriously ... SO many cup holders. I can recall at least 11, though I'm pretty sure there are more.
3. You Can Plug in Christmas Lights 4 of 11
When the guy who dropped off the Odyssey to me pointed out the plug-in in the back seat, he suggested that it could be used to hook up your XBOX to play using the fancy pants "Ultrawide Rear Entertainment System." But, I had bigger (much more festive) plans. Christmas lights! The entire van was like Christmas magic and it made my heart grow at least three sizes a'la The Grinch. Though I'll admit I may have overdone it a bit with the garland and trim. More is more when it comes to holiday van decorations though, I always say. Also, please note: three car seats across. WHAAAA?!
Hey Everybody! Come and See How Festive I Look! 5 of 11
If only you could see how full of Christmas cheer my face is in this picture. Answer: Super full.
4. Holiday Movies While You Drive 6 of 11
Christmas movies are one of the best parts of the holiday season and while we were driving the Odyssey for the week, we watched both Santa Paws movies and Elf. I still don't know what happened in Santa Paws since obviously I was driving, but it was fun listening to Elf while the kiddos watched and annoyingly quoting lines from the movie. I'm not sure my daughter was super impressed but, "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is quoting Elf for all to hear!"
5. The More the Merrier! 7 of 11
I'm used to driving a sedan, so it was great to have all the extra space that a minivan offers. It was perfect for piling up friends and family for holiday outings, like going to see Christmas lights. Usually we have to take two cars.
Exhibit A: Christmas Lights 8 of 11
See! Christmas light fun was had by all!
6. Lots of Storage for Schlepping Presents 9 of 11
The storage space in this thing is unreal. The trunk space is super deep and made it really easy for hauling around large things. A friend gave me this train table to bring home and in order to fit it in my mom's car we had to put down all the seats and lay it down flat, but, in this bad boy I could stand it straight up and only had to put down one seat. It was just barely too wide or I wouldn't have had to put down any seats.
Even so, putting down the seats or taking them out is ridiculously easy in the Odyssey! Basically this thing has the motherlode of room for schlepping presents and shopping bags around during the holiday gift giving season.
7. XM Holiday Tunes 10 of 11
I've never had XM radio, so it was cool getting to try it out and listen to the holiday stations on repeat ... much to my husband's Christmas-music-hating dismay.
8. A Vacuum to Suck Ip the Christmas Cheer Aftermath 11 of 11
And the pièce de résistance? The built-in vacuum. I never knew I needed a built-in vacuum, but now it's just so clear. Sucking up all the aftermath of that holiday cheer (Christmas cookie crumbs, pine needles, etc...)? Priceless.
